When I’m shopping for a new eyebrow pencil or swatching foundation shades, it isn’t out of the norm for me to be standing in the aisle next to a group of tweens. These days, kids between the ages of 9 and 12 are exploring Sephora and walking out of the store with bags filled with TikTok-viral products they can’t wait to try and wear.
We understand that the idea of your tween wearing makeup may be hard to fully support. But as cosmetic dermatologist Jenny Cheung, MD, reassures us, makeup can be a fun introduction to self-expression and self-care. Thankfully, formulations have come a long way, and there are plenty of clean, safe options on the market. To help you and your tween shop smarter, we looked at several makeup kits for tweens, prioritizing age-appropriate styles and gentle ingredients.
Why We Like It
This duo is the closest your tween will get to recreating that lit-from-within glow—though that probably won’t be too hard with their young skin. The liquid formula makes it easy and enjoyable for tweens to massage onto their faces. And parents don’t have to worry about products clogging their pores because they are non-comedogenic and silicone-free.
The Warmglow illuminator boasts a soft, non-sparkly gold hue that layers well with moisturizer or sunscreen. The Dew Blush includes a doe-foot brush applicator, which is key for kids learning the art of dabbing on the right amount of cheek or lip color.
What Parents Say
“My daughter likes Saie makeup because of their appealing feeling and smooth packaging.”—Amanda, mom of a 10-year-old
But Take Note
Tweens with fair complexions may not notice a significant difference after applying the illuminator.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Skin illuminator and blush
- Number of items: 2
- Suitable for: Daily wear
- Recommended ages: 10-12

For tweens who simply can’t be bothered with a multi-step makeup routine, this multipurpose stick will become an everyday essential. They can wear it anywhere—from eyes to lips and all over the face—as the cream-to-powder formula is buildable and non-greasy.
At first glance, the tiny tube appears to be big on shimmer. However, most of the shades offer a natural finish, especially for children with deeper skin tones.
What Experts Say
Global beauty expert Lakeisha Dale is a fan of e.l.f. Cosmetics products like the Multi-Stick for tweens because it’s a great way to ease into makeup without spending a ton of money.
But Take Note
e.l.f. Cosmetics are free of phthalates, parabens, nonylphenol ethoxylates, triclosan, triclocarban, and hydroquinone. Yet, we have noticed that recent labels of this multi-stick mention mica as an ingredient, which, although considered safe for skin, has been linked to unethical mining practices.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Multi-purpose makeup stick
- Number of items: 1
- Suitable for: Daily wear
- Recommended ages: 11-12

The Petite ‘n Pretty brand continues the tradition of gifting beauty-obsessed tweens a starter makeup kit with fool-proof basics tucked inside a pink zipper bag. Free of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, the quality cosmetics are what stand out most among parents and pediatricians.
We love that this kit features grooming products. Your tween will be able to sculpt fine or thick hairs using the clear mascara/brow gel. The mini blotting sheets made from hemp and pulp work to control oiliness and shine. And the buttery soft lip balm adds the final touch to a beginner-friendly routine.
But Take Note
The pearlescent shimmer of the lip gloss may read a little ashy on children with cool or neutral undertones.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Mascara/brow gel, lip gloss, oil blotting sheets, makeup case
- Number of items: 5
- Suitable for: Daily wear
- Recommended ages: 9-12

After blowing up on social media in 2023, Glow Recipe remains incredibly popular among younger beauty buffs. It’s not hard to see why either. The brand seamlessly blends skincare ingredients and clean formulas with subtle tints and natural-looking shimmer. This gives a very “lit from within” glow, making it a great choice for a no-makeup makeup look.
This value pack has everything beginners need for a flawless everyday routine. Simply pat a few bronzing drops into the skin for a gentle sun-kissed glow. Then use the tinted cheek serum’s doefoot applicator to add a dollop of product on the apples of the cheek. And finish off the look with a swipe of sheer glossy lip balm. Doesn’t get much easier than that!
But Take Note
Most of the products are miniature, so your tween will get limited use.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Lip balm, bronzing drops, tinted cheek serum
- Number of items: 3
- Suitable for: Daily wear
- Recommended ages: 12+
Pros
-
Hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin
-
Includes gently hydrating skincare ingredients
-
SPF 30 protects young skin
Why We Like It
For the tween who wants a little coverage but isn’t quite ready to step into foundation territory, this tinted sunscreen is it. It has an incredibly sheer and lightweight pigment for a “your skin but better” finish. And to keep things simple, the product does triple duty, also serving as a facial sunscreen and moisturizer.
So how does it nourish young skin? It’s made with very gentle, hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides. For kids with acne, niacinamide (aka vitamin B3) is great for soothing and evening out skin tone and texture without harsh ingredients.
But Take Note
There are currently only three shades available. While the product is very sheer and blends out nicely, there is a chance it won’t match your tween’s skin tone perfectly if they apply a lot.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Tinted moisturizer and sunscreen
- Number of items: 1
- Suitable for: Daily use
- Recommended ages: 12 and up

Glossier has established a cult following among makeup lovers of all ages for their your-skin-but-better products. And now with brick-and-mortar stores across the U.S., tweens and their parents can swatch products to discover what makes sense for their unique needs and lifestyle.
This four-piece set is all kids need for their daily routine. Cloud Paint works as both a natural-looking blush and bronzer. The seven Boy Brow shades offer tweens a variety of options for achieving well-groomed brows. And we wouldn’t be surprised if children started collecting tubes of Balm DotCom thanks to its tinted, non-sticky formula. To round out the kit, Glossier You is a very subtle fragrance with notes of skin and light florals, for a delicate scent.
But Take Note
The fragrance can be irritating to younger kids with sensitive skin. Consider testing a tiny bit of the perfume out first to check for sensitivities before spraying it everywhere.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Blush, brow gel, lip balm, perfume
- Number of items: 4
- Suitable for: Daily wear or special events
- Recommended ages: 11-12
Pros
-
Fragrance-free and made from food-grade flavor
-
Vegan formula is safe for sensitive, eczema-prone skin types

The dome-shaped applicator of Tower 28 Lip Treatments harken back to the balms you may have shoved inside your pocket as a kid. This makes it effortless for tweens to smooth onto their lips. This set includes the four bestsellers: original SOS Vanilla, Confetti Cake, Sugar Plum, and Red Bean Mochi. Each has just a touch of sheer tint for a natural look.
The lippies are also incredibly nourishing for dry, chapped lips. The vegan, alcohol-free formula is made with jojoba oil, coconut oil, and shea butter. It’s kinda surprising that the product still feels lightweight and not sticky.
What Parents Say
“Tower 28 stands out because of their cute packaging, amazing formulas, and lip colors.”—Amanda, mom of a 10-year-old
But Take Note
Despite being fragrance-free, the products do have flavoring. These ingredients have a scent that can be overwhelming. Consider if your tween is particularly sensitive to smell.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Lip gloss
- Number of items: 4
- Suitable for: Daily wear or special events
- Recommended ages: 9-12
Pros
-
Washes off easily with warm water or gentle cleanser
-
Clean, pigmented formula that’s safe for sensitive eyes

Not all mascaras are created equal. But we believe the Ilia Limitless Lash Mascara is a great intro for tweens who want a natural lift to their eyelashes. While there’s always a learning curve when it comes to getting your mascara just right, this is a great starter mascara since there’s no transfer, smudging, or flaking.
We also love that it’s made with shea butter and beeswax, which work to keep your tweens’ lashes soft. And nobody likes rubbing furiously at your lashes only to look like a panda after your shower. Thankfully, there’s no excessive rubbing needed to wash off this mascara.
But Take Note
It’s only available in brown and black. Clear mascara can be great for learning to put on mascara without worrying about accidentally getting pigment on the bridge of your nose. We wish there were a clear option for this product, too.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Mascara
- Number of items: 1
- Suitable for: Special events
- Recommended ages: 12
Pros
-
Vegan, and free of parabens and phthalates
-
Flattering on a variety of skin tones
Why We Like It
Summer Fridays is proof that it is possible to fuse color cosmetics with quality skincare. It’s one of the few vegan and cruelty-free brands that offer products free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, and other potentially harmful ingredients.
The Cloud Dew moisturizer has a delightful gel texture. And the matching peach-pink blush and balm warm up skin without overpowering the face. The blush has a subtle, but buildable, color for a natural-looking flush. The balm is more of a sheer gloss with just the tiniest hint of baby pink color.
What Parents Say
“It’s very moisturizing and makes her lips feels soft and smooth.”—Abi, mom of a 12-year-old
But Take Note
Our tween reviewer candidly shared that she feels like “there’s not enough product in the tube.” That seems a fair assessment considering the moisturizer and balm are both minis, while the blush is the only full-sized product.
The Details:
- Makeup type: Moisturizer, lip balm, and blush
- Number of items: 3
- Suitable for: Daily wear
- Recommended ages: 11-12

Other Makeup Kits for Tweens We Like
Our Experts
To find out what to look for in makeup for tweens, we also spoke with:
- Jessie Cheung, MD, board-certified dermatologist at Cheung Aesthetics and Wellness
- Lakeisha Dale, global beauty educator and licensed esthetician
- Abimbola Ishola, a journalist, author, and mother of a 12-year-old
Our Review Process
We researched dozens of products on the market, using the above expert’s insight to narrow down our list to 10 highly recommended makeup kits and gift sets for tweens. Additionally, we assessed makeup on the following criteria:
- Ingredients: We asked our experts to weigh in on harmful ingredients to look out for and avoid when buying makeup. In addition, we noted if products were made with hydrating skincare essentials that help to smooth and calm skin.
- Color Range: We delved deep into the range of shades. To determine if the makeup offered diversity in tone, we asked parents of tweens with different complexions to provide their candid experiences.
- Application: We considered the application process from start to finish. Was it simple to put on smaller eyes, lips, or faces with no or very little knowledge of technique or product type? Our parents highlighted that an easy routine is important to their tweens.
- Packaging: So-called “cute” packaging was among one of the top elements parents said their tweens looked for. So we pored over the details of tubes, bottles, brushes, and more for fun but easy-to-use designs.
- Value: We also asked parents to reflect on cost, the amount of product in the package, and the way it informs their overall perspective on the value of products.
Factors to Consider When Buying Makeup for Tweens
- Safety: Not all makeup is safe for tweens, even those that are specifically marketed for children. It is crucial for parents to educate themselves on potentially harmful ingredients, such as parabens, phthalates, and fragrances. Read labels carefully and opt for brands known for rigorous testing and safety standards.
- Ease of Removal: Balms, tints, and glosses are some of the easiest makeup to remove. These products also allow a tween’s skin to show through naturally, without being masked by too much color or coverage. Lighter formulations make removing makeup at the end of the day less of a chore.
- Age Appropriateness: While the concept of age appropriateness in makeup is subjective, we opted for products with more sheer pigment and natural shades, such as dewy pinks or subtle bronzes. These provide a more skin-like finish that highlights your tween’s youthful skin and natural glow. We also focused on easy-to-use products like tinted sunscreens, sheer lip balms, and subtle blushes, rather than eyeliners, lipsticks, and eyeshadows that require more technique.
Is Makeup Safe for Tweens’ Skin?
According to Dr. Cheung, makeup can be safe for tweens but only if it’s gentle, minimal, and applied with care. “Tween skin is still developing its protective barrier and microbiome, so it’s much more sensitive to harsh ingredients, fragrances, and occlusive formulas.” Her best words of advice to parents: makeup at this age should feel like play, not camouflage.
If you’re unsure about a product, it is always a good idea to consult with a dermatologist or family doctor. Always do a patch test on the inner arm before using a makeup product on the face to determine whether it may cause a skin rash or irritation.
Ingredients to Avoid in Tween Makeup
It’s pretty easy to get distracted by all the pretty glittery or shockingly bright tween makeup kits. However, many of the products are formulated with dyes, mica dust, and fragrance that Dr. Cheung cautions can disrupt the skin barrier, cause allergic reactions, or trigger breakouts.
As a rule of thumb, try to avoid parabens, sulfates, essential oils, alcohol-based toners, and silicones. These ingredients can strip the natural lipid layer that protects tween skin, says Dr. Cheung. “Once that barrier is compromised, dryness, sensitivity, and inflammation quickly follow.”
Dale also warns parents about peptides, retinol, caffeine, and lip-plumping ingredients that are too harsh for young skin. She explains, “Makeup has taken a skincare focus in recent years, so they may include actives [i.e., active ingredients] that wouldn’t be necessary for your tweens’ developing skin.”
What’s a Good Age to Start Wearing Makeup?
The right age for children to wear makeup is subjective, but Dale recommends having a conversation with your tween about makeup. She adds, “Ask them what products they are interested in and why before deciding whether or not you will allow them to use makeup.”
Having this conversation is important because, for many tweens, societal standards and external pressures have a large influence on their interest in makeup. For example, Ishola tries to limit her 12-year-old daughter’s use of makeup and exposure to influencer videos. “We don’t want her to think she always needs to apply a beauty enhancement to feel and be beautiful,” says Ishola. With the right balance of guidance, curiosity, and confidence, you and your tween can set parameters for when and how they wear makeup.
From a biological standpoint, learning about makeup and skincare as a tween can help them develop good personal care habits. “By that age, hormones start changing oil balance and pore activity, so kids can learn good hygiene habits early—cleansing, moisturizing, and understanding what their skin reacts to,” says Dr. Cheung. “The key is education and moderation: keep it sheer, skip heavy contouring or long-wear layers, and focus on enhancing features.”
How to Teach Tweens to Remove Makeup
Both the dermatologist and the esthetician we interviewed swear by double cleansing for removing makeup. Though Dr. Cheung believes that makeup removal should feel as automatic as brushing teeth. Here is the simple three-step routine she teaches:
- Use micellar water or an oil-based cleanser to dissolve makeup.
- Follow with a mild, pH-balanced cleanser, gently massaging into skin. Avoid scrubbing.
- Rinse off cleansers, pat skin dry, and moisturize immediately to restore the skin’s barrier.
Tween Makeup Starter Checklist
The major takeaway from our explainer on tween makeup is to keep it simple. Simple formulas. Simple application. Simple removal. To build out their own makeup kit, consider this checklist:
- Skip the foundation and opt for tinted mineral sunscreen or light BB creams.
- Cream blush or lip balms pull double-duty and are easy to blend on the eyes, cheeks, and lips.
- Groom brows with a clear brow gel.
Remember, any brushes or sponges should be washed weekly. Be sure to rinse the fibers of makeup brushes and keep water out of the base/handle to avoid mold buildup. Then, lie flat to dry. And as Dr. Cheung sums it up: the best makeup for young skin is hydration, sunscreen, and sleep. “Everything else is just sparkle on top of healthy skin habits.”
