‘Frog Sqwad’ Makes Amphibian Teams Collect Food in Wild Places

by R.Donald

Frog Sqwad is a co-op party game where you need to use your tongue to travel through wacky levels getting food for the Swamp King.

The whole thing feels chaotic, frantic, and quite fun, especially with friends. The game can be played in a single player mode, however joining up to seven friends is actually where a lot of the magic happens in this game. Essentially, you all are small frogs that need to find food for the Swamp King. This food comes in the form of hamburgers, giant eggs, apples, fries – lots of tasty human food that you grab with your sticky froggy tongue. You need to get this food and make sure it ends up in a bowl, meeting the day’s quota.

Some of the smaller food items in Frog Sqwad can be eaten and add to your health. You can only hold so much though and will grow in size as you eat. You can actually end up as a giant ball, able to break down walls and roll about instead of run. Other, larger items like eggs need to be dragged to the bowl with your tongue. Some items are more breakable than others, too, so there is a lot to consider when trying to find offerings for the Swamp King.

Each of the procedurally generated maps have their own dangers as well. Slime monsters can eat you, toxic ooze cannot be jumped into, spikes are always dangerous… There are also little puzzles and buttons that can help you end up with more food. It’s a bit about understanding the levels and mastering what you should be doing.

Frog Sqwad is a challenging game. I found the movement of the frogs when I played a demo at New Game Plus to be ridiculously floaty for this type of game where you need to jump specifically and need to make sure you don’t die. That said, I can see that if I was playing with friends who were able to solve more of the precise rooms, we could all play to our strengths and have a lot of fun. It’s a delightful concept and I can see how it would make for some fantastic multiplayer.

Frog Sqwad is available now on Steam.
