Italy has formally moved ahead with the modernization of its aerial refueling fleet by awarding Airbus a contract for six new A330 MRTT tanker aircraft, ending a lengthy procurement process that began nearly two years ago following the cancellation of plans to acquire Boeing KC-46 aircraft from the United States.
According to information published through official European Union channels, the program is valued at approximately €1.4 billion and is expected to span 122 months. The acquisition is intended to replace part of the Italian Air Force’s aging tanker capability while ensuring the long-term sustainability of its air-to-air refueling operations.

However, specialized defense media have noted discrepancies between the timeline disclosed in the EU documentation and the schedule recently outlined by Italy’s ARMAEREO procurement authority. The figures released by the EU appear to extend the expected delivery window for the six A330 MRTTs by roughly two additional years compared to previous Italian projections. The reasons behind the differing timelines have not yet been clarified, nor have officials confirmed when the first aircraft could enter service with the Aeronautica Militare.
The tanker replacement effort has become a strategic priority for Italy, particularly as the service seeks to gradually retire its fleet of four Boeing 767 tanker aircraft, which have supported aerial refueling missions since 2011 under an intensive operational tempo. Concerns over delays are especially significant given the time already lost during the ultimately abandoned KC-46 procurement process.
Italy’s decision to walk away from the KC-46 program came after growing concerns regarding the platform’s technical shortcomings. As previously reported, Italian authorities closely monitored the six Category 1 deficiencies identified by the USAF in 2024. These issues reportedly involved the aircraft’s new camera system, drainage mast assemblies, and a fuel manifold seal, among other components. Acquisition costs also reportedly influenced the cancellation decision, with the KC-46 package estimated at around €1.1 billion.

Despite the higher overall investment, the Airbus A330 MRTT is widely regarded as one of the most capable tanker platforms currently in service. With the procurement, Italy is expected to become the nineteenth operator of the aircraft, joining other European users including Spain, the United Kingdom, and France. The aircraft offers a maximum payload capacity of approximately 45 tons and a range close to 16,000 kilometers, features that have contributed to its growing popularity among NATO and allied air forces.
The tanker acquisition also forms part of a broader Italian military aviation modernization effort. In recent weeks, the Aeronautica Militare additionally confirmed the purchase of new Eurofighter combat aircraft from Leonardo. As reported on May 12, Italy plans to acquire eight additional fighters as part of a larger transition process aimed at replacing earlier Eurofighter variants that lack key modern combat technologies, including AESA radar systems.
