Beverley Fordham, Kent County Council cabinet member for education and skills, said the local authority “strongly supported” Kent schools’ measures to become smartphone free.
“Many schools have reported a positive impact on behaviour when mobile phones are taken out of the equation,” she added.
“It’s an important step toward creating calmer, safer, learning environments and it’s promising to see so many parents and carers in Kent agree and have signed the petition.”
Fordham added the decision to ban smartphones was “ultimately down to headteachers”.
She added KCC would continue to work closely with schools, parents and carers to support smartphone-free initiatives being introduced to the education system.
