Action call to tackle thefts of and from cars in Dorset

Action due to be taken includes summer campaigns about thefts from cars and vans – advising people how to make their vehicles safe.

Police and Crime Commissioner David Sidwick although the figures were much better – both down by around 20per cent year on year.

He said the theft of vehicles, where there has been an 18 per cent reduction, almost 200 fewer incidents, put the county 13th nationally. Only around 6per cent of these cases resulted in what the police record as ‘a positive outcome’.

The Commissioner said that detection of car thefts and thefts from cars and other vehicles was among the most difficult to prosecute, often undertaken by professional gangs when it came to the theft of high-end vehicles.

For theft from vehicles the county’s figures were 22per cent down year on year, although positive outcomes were just under 2per cent, 32nd in the country.

“I am not happy with that performance and neither is the Deputy Chief Constable… one of the issues being looked at is prolific offenders,” he said.

He said the issue was also about prevention and encourage vehicle owners not to leave valuable in sight and to make sure their vehicles were locked.
