A landmark solar-electric catamaran launch

Pioneer Yachts has launched the first unit of its PY60 solar-electric catamaran, marking a significant milestone for the German yacht builder just two years after its establishment.

The 18m (60ft) Pioneer One has entered the water for the first time at the shipyard’s facility in Stralsund, Germany. The yacht will now begin an extensive programme of sea trials to validate its performance under real operating conditions before making its world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026, taking place from 8th to 13th September.

Designed and built in Germany, the PY60 has been engineered from the ground up as a solar-electric catamaran, rather than adapting an existing powerboat platform. The yacht integrates solar energy generation, battery storage, and electric propulsion into a single purpose-built system, with an emphasis on efficiency, reliability, and practical long-range cruising.

The exterior styling was developed by Cossutti & Ganz, while the interiors have been designed by Micheletti + Partners.

The first hull, Pioneer One, will also serve as a development platform. Founder, engineer, and entrepreneur Mike Frank will personally operate the yacht, using real-world cruising data to refine future production models and optimise onboard systems.

Commenting on the launch, Frank said, “Seeing Pioneer One in the water is one of those moments you don’t forget. This isn’t another electric catamaran. It’s a completely new kind of yacht for this segment, built for real operation. I’m sure the sea trials ahead are where that gets proven.”

Cannes Yachting Festival 2026 debut

Following the completion of sea trials, Pioneer One will make its international debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2026, where visitors will have the opportunity to experience Pioneer Yachts’ first production model and its purpose-built approach to solar-electric yachting.
