Meta’s smart glasses are having a huge moment, but Samsung’s competition is coming soon

If you need any further evidence Meta’s smart glasses are one of the most popular wearable tech products available at the moment, look no further than EssilorLuxottica’s recent sales performance, which it revealed during an earnings call.

Pushing sales forward

The eyewear manufacturer, which owns the Ray-Ban and Oakley brands and is partnered with Meta, reported its sales of AI smart doubled between April and June this year.

Unfortunately, the company did not provide information on the exact number it sold, or the revenue specifically attached to AI glasses during this time.

However, it did report an 8.7% increase in overall revenue during the time period, and attributed it to the AI smart glasses sales performance.

EssilorLuxottica’s Francesco Milleri, Chairman and CEO, and Paul du Saillant, Deputy CEO, said in a statement:

We made significant progress across our key growth drivers, from the acceleration of our myopia management portfolio to the sustained success of AI-powered wearables, driven by our iconic Ray-Ban and Oakley brands and our core expertise.

More partnerships

Meta isn’t slowing down with promotion of its AI smart glasses. Towards the end of June, Meta announced its Meta Glasses range, which do not use the Ray-Ban or Oakley branding. While the frames are still being manufactured by EssilorLuxottica, it was confirmed this will take place outside the brand’s facilities.

Meta continues to use major sporting events to promote its Oakley AI smart glasses models. These are aimed at a different type of person to its more lifestyle-focused Ray-Ban models.

The players in the World Cup 2026 winning Spanish team were presented with custom Meta Oakley Vanguard smart glasses, each with special packaging, and the FIFA World Cup 2026 logo etched into the lenses.

Meta has also become the Official AI Wearables Partner to the T100 Triathlon World Tour. The Meta Oakley Vanguard and HSTN models will be worn by athletes, ready to bring a unique first-person view from those actually competing in the event.

Incoming competition

The Samsung x Warby Parker smartglasses

Meta and EssilorLuxottica are making the most of a period where they have very little competition. Models like the Even Realities Even G2 and the MemoMind One do not have a camera, and rely on an in-lens display to attract buyers.

However, Samsung and Google, along with partners Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, are preparing to launch smart glasses later this year that will directly compete with the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

Our early impressions of the high-tech wearables are good, with the low weight and varied designs making them stand out.
