KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – The heat is about to crank up and stay that way for a while. Not only is it important to take care of yourself during a heat wave, it’s also crucial to keep your furry friends safe and cool.

The crew at the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association is urging pet owners to limit their animal’s time outdoors, especially from around 11 a.m. to about 4 p.m., which is the hottest part of the day.

“If your pet is experiencing signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, you’re going to be looking for panting, vomiting, not being able to stand up on their own. Anything like that, you are going to want to take them to the nearest veterinarian,” said Angie Gillenwater, KCHA Community Engagement Manager.

It’s also a great idea to try avoiding concrete and asphalt and remember to bring your pets inside with fresh water at the ready.
