The new Steam Controller has been one of the most talked-about gaming accessories in the past few weeks, especially after it sold out on launch day. Now, Valve has made the controller even more interesting for modders and creators by releasing the official CAD files for both the Steam Controller and its unique charging puck.
In a new post on Steam, Valve confirmed that users can now download the external shell files for the controller under a Creative Commons license. The company said the files are meant for people who want to hack, mod, customize, or design accessories for the Steam Controller.
Steam Controller CAD files
The files include STP models, STL models, and engineering drawings for both the controller and the puck. Valve also included important details like critical measurements and keep-out areas, which should make it much easier for creators to build accessories that properly fit the controller without running into design problems.
This is a pretty big move for the modding community. Normally, people who want to design accessories for gaming hardware have to manually measure the device themselves or rely on unofficial models made by the community. That process can take a lot of time and usually leads to compatibility issues. Since these are official CAD files directly from Valve, creators now have accurate dimensions to work with right away.
For those unfamiliar, CAD files are 3D design files commonly used in engineering, manufacturing, and 3D printing. People with access to a 3D printer or modeling software can use these files to create custom shells, controller grips, wall mounts, stands, travel cases, charging docks, and other accessories specifically designed for the Steam Controller.
Valve did clarify that these files only cover the outside shell of the controller and puck. In other words, you cannot use them to fully 3D print an entire working Steam Controller from scratch, as the internal electronics and components are not included. Still, for accessory makers and hobbyists, this opens the door to a lot of creative possibilities.
The timing is also interesting because the Steam Controller is currently sold out. Demand for the controller was extremely high at launch, and Valve has already confirmed that it is working on a restock after units disappeared faster than expected. In the meantime, modders and accessory creators now have a chance to start experimenting with new ideas.
