SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The season for gifting flowers to loved ones is here, from mothers to college and high school graduates. But there is an important thing to keep in mind for pets.
Some flowers can be toxic to dogs or cats, like tulips, lilies, daffodils or hyacinths. Common house plants like aloe or the sago palm can also be dangerous if eaten by pets. Veterinarians also advise keeping pets out of the soil or fertilizer.
“Also, look at the mulch that you’re putting with them. Some of that’s cow manure or sheep manure or chicken manure or whatever and they blend that in. And we may not know we may just think it’s mulch,” said Dr. Phillip Brown of the Animal Care Center. “It’s excrement from an animal and there could be salmonella and god knows what else in that product.”
If you believe your pet may have eaten something poisonous, you should contact your vet right away. You can also reach out to the ASPCA Poison Control’s 24-hour emergency hotline.
