The New York Jets’ Week 1 opponent for the 2026 season is starting to come into focus.
The NFL will release the full schedule for every team on Thursday, May 14, at 8:00 pm. However, leading up to that date, the NFL is strategically leaking games to build excitement for the season.
One of those announcements included the New York Giants starting off the season at home against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. So what does that have to do with the Jets?
ESPN’s Rich Cimini noted on social media that “Barring a Monday night game (which seems unlikely), the Jets will open [the season] on the road.”
That is because the Jets and Giants both play at MetLife Stadium. If the Jets played at home on Sunday afternoon, there wouldn’t be enough time to turn the stadium around from Jets to Giants, leading into Sunday Night Football on the same day.
So Who Are the Jets’ Possible Opponents in Week 1?
If we are to take all of that at face value, that means the Jets are likely opening up the season on the road. We know all of the possible opponents that the Jets could play in the season opener:
Cimini said the “leading possibilities” seem to be either at Tennessee to face off against former head coach Robert Saleh or at Buffalo to play their division rival at their new stadium.
***UPDATE***
The Bills will officially open their new stadium in Week 2 on Thursday Night Football against the Lions. That means in Week 1, they will be on the road. Thus, Buffalo is eliminated as a potential opponent for the Jets.
In other words, the Bills couldn’t host the Jets in Week 1 if they’re on the road.
So the picture continues to become clearer as hints are dropped on social media of what other teams are doing.
Revenge Flavor in Some Form or Fashion Feels Right
The Jets’ Week 1 opponent feels like it will feature some juicy revenge angle. It certainly did last season when the Jets hosted the Pittsburgh Steelers and former QB1 Aaron Rodgers.
We could be destined for another version of that in 2026.
Of the potential opponents the Jets could face, there are plenty of revenge angles to be had.
There are former NYJ coaches who are on new teams: Saleh in Tennessee and Mike LaFleur in Arizona.
You could go the former player route; Justin Fields is in Kansas City. It’s unclear if Patrick Mahomes will be ready for Week 1. Could we get the reverse QB revenge angle to start the season?
The other revenge angle is Aaron Glenn versus his old team in Detroit. For better or for worse, Glenn will continue to be connected to his time in Detroit. Jets fans are hoping that this is an indicator of future success if they buy into the AG vision what could happen.
We will know for certain on Thursday, but some breadcrumbs are hinting at the Jets’ potential Week 1 opponent.
