Dogdays

If you haven’t noticed, we’re currently in the dog days of summer, that extra-hot, extra-sticky period of time between July and August where even stepping outside for just a few minutes feels like entering an unwelcome sauna.

Still, persist we must, and if you’re spending any time outdoors in the next few months, whether it be a last-minute vacation before the start of school, or (like me) sitting in the sun for your children’s sporting events, these are the accessories you that will keep you feeling — and looking — cool in the sweltering outdoors.

Biggest Fan
I don’t think I would have made it through our recent visit to Disney World (which we did in mid-July, so you know it was hot) without one of these JISULIFE portable neck fans. The bestselling, lightweight accessory, which has more than 52,000 positive reviews on Amazon, is battery operated, rechargeable and bladeless, making it safe for children, and those of us with long hair, to wear around the neck.

Cool Off
Another must-have accessory for the summer (and, really, any warm-weather activity) is a cooling towel. I personally have these Sukeen microfiber cooling towels, which come in a variety of colors; the set of four towels also each have their own clear carrying pouch. To activate, simply soak the towel in cold water, wring it out, place it on your body, and, voila, instant cooling system. The lightweight towels, which draw sweat away from your skin, also stay chilled for up to three hours, depending on weather conditions.

Eye Candy
I absolutely love Quay Australia sunglasses, which are high-quality while being reasonably priced. I invest in new styles every few years, often taking advantage of Quay’s buy one, get one sales that take place throughout the seasons. One of my favorite styles is the “All In,” a classic aviator-shaped sunny with metal arms. For those with sensitive eyes like me, I highly recommend getting polarized lenses.
Price: $75 for standard lenses. $95 for polarized lenses. Buy Here

Hats Off
Admittedly, the straw Hemlock hat looks a little dorky, but hear me out. My neighbor, who recently moved back to the Pittsburgh area after years of living in Florida, highly recommended the unisex lifeguard hat, which he says all the locals in the know wear throughout the year. My husband got one before our vacation and it kept him cool and sunburn free during the 20,000 steps we walked each day in Disney. The durable hat, which has certified UPF 50+ sun protection, also comes in a variety of fun colors and patterns, although my husband opted for the plain version.

Dress it Up
Perhaps the ultimate summer athleisure wear, the original Outdoor Voices exercise dress, which is billed as being “designed for doing anything,” is sporty and flattering while being extremely functional. Made from breathable, sweat-wicking material, the versatile piece, which can be dressed up or down, features adjustable straps and has a built-in shorts liner with side pockets.
