It’s the spring equinox this week so it’s time to put winter behind us and head outside – at last! And I’ve found some really useful gardening kit that gets plenty of positive reviews – just in case you needed a little encouragement.

There’s everything from raised wooden planters and soil sieves, to beautiful weatherproof, padded gloves that Gardener’s World named the best gloves for year-round use. And since we have reached the ideal date for the first mow of the year, we’ve also got a nice reliable mower.

For the gardener

Gorgeous gloves: If you want robust but stylish gardening gloves, look no further than Burgon & Ball Love The Glove, which cost from £14.99 on eBay. They come in gorgeous designs, like this oak leaf print – which I can personally recommend, having received a pair for Mother’s Day!

GARDENING NEWS AND ADVICE

The mitts are ultra-soft but made from hardwearing fabric that doesn’t stiffen when wet. Padded palms give extra cushioning during repetitive tasks, and the leather trim adds a touch of luxury. Best of all, they are machine washable at 30°C.

Padded kneeler/stool: Take the strain out of gardening with the Crystals 2-in-1 Heavy Duty Garden Kneeler, which costs £13.97 on Amazon. It’s the perfect height for tending to flower beds or herbaceous borders, then flip it over to sit comfortably whilst pruning bushes.

The folding kneeler also features three pockets to keep garden tools close to hand. Derek loved it and said: “If like me getting down to do jobs is getting difficult this simple kneeler is just the thing . Great quality and easy to use folds out and put back and hang up.”

Boot remover: The Cast Iron Outdoor Welly Boot Jack costs £12 at Dunelm and means can keep your hands clean when removing muddy wellies. Once you’ve used it, you’ll wonder how you ever took off your boots before.

It has dozens of five-star reviews. Welshduchess said: “Well made and does the job, ideal for mucky boots or those finding difficulty removing shoes.” Sandie agreed and said: “The item is heavy cast iron and I actually can’t believe how little I paid for it. It looks great outside my front door.”

For the plants

Raised planter: The VegTrug Raised Bed Wooden Planter costs £79 at Dunelm and is perfect for growing shallow-rooted veg, herbs and salad. It stands 80cm high, making planting and harvesting easy, but deterring all but the most persistent slugs.

The FSC certified timber is treated with water-based preservative  that is safe for an edible harvest. Donna gave it five stars and said: “Arrived on time and was easy and quick to assemble as described. High enough to stop pet rabbits getting in and eating my plants”.

Mini greenhouse: The McGregor 4 Tier Mini Greenhouse costs £30 at Argos, saving £10. Ideal for seedlings, there are griddled shelves to prevent over-watering, and a zip-it-down roll-it-up front for easy access.

The mini greenhouse can be put up in minutes, without the need for tools, and has a two year guarantee. It gets more than 400 five-star reviews, with Pregan saying: “The price was very good indeed for such a great item, so impressed by this that I am getting a second one. I cannot recommend this highly enough.”

Soil sieve: The large Garden Sieve costs £12 at Dunelm and is just what you need to get rid of debris and lumpy bits in your soil. Made from durable iron (although appears to be silver in colour) it has 79 five-star reviews.

“Just The Job,” said STM. “Wanted a larger sieve than was generally available so purchased this and pleased I did, it’s just what I was after and having used it I found it study and comfortable to use.”

Reliable mower: The Flymo EasiGlide 330V hover lawnmower is £125 at Argos. Powered by a 1700W motor, they say it’s highly manoeuvrable and lightweight, and I would agree – my own EasiGlide is more than 10 years old and I’d be happy to buy another, but hopefully not just yet!

It’s had more than 150 five-star reviews, like Furnace40 who said: “i brought this a few weeks ago and only wish i had brought it years ago it is so light and easy to use fantastic”. Flogger said it looks great but added: “Would love to leave a review but it’s not stopped raining since I bought it !!!!!”
