Life with a growing brood is fun and rewarding – but can also be busy and expensive. Choosing the right family car can make a huge difference, and an electric vehicle (EV) can be a great choice for all sorts of reasons. Here are just a few:

1. They’re reliable and safe

‘Reliability is especially important for a family car,’ says Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, who has a blended family of four boys aged 11-16, as well as a dog, with her partner. ‘Most people buy their cars secondhand and some might be concerned about issues such as battery life. But batteries are covered by an eight-year warranty, which isn’t the case for petrol or diesel vehicles. Also, there are fewer moving parts, such as the clutch, that can go wrong.’ Most EVs have excellent safety features and the power and acceleration to help you negotiate busy traffic with ease.

2. They can save you money

‘We’re lucky enough to have off-street parking, which means we can charge at home and make great savings,’ says Erin. ‘Using an off-peak electricity tariff means we currently pay about £4.72 for 200 miles versus £30-40 for fuel, depending on pump prices.’ Although it’s more economical to run an EV using home charging, nearby charge points are also an option. Costs can vary, though, so do check them out first.

3. Your children won’t nag you about running a gas-guzzler

EVs can be a great way for your family to be greener, as these vehicles don’t run on fossil fuel or have tailpipe emissions. ‘The children are wholeheartedly behind the decision to run an electric vehicle,’ says Erin. ‘They’re concerned about the environment and love that the tech is so cutting edge. The vehicle feels futuristic – their mates definitely approve.’

4. You don’t have to compromise on comfort or style

‘Electric vehicles definitely aren’t a hair-shirt option,’ says Erin. There are loads of great makes and models available, with more entering the market all the time. In terms of seven-seater SUVs, I’ve got my eye on the Kia EV9 and the Volvo EX90, which are both brilliant cars on sale this year.’

The majority of EVs come with a smartphone app, allowing you to pre-heat them on cold mornings – great for keeping your children warm.

5. It’s becoming less expensive to buy or lease an EV

Like any new technology, the first EVs were expensive compared to their petrol or diesel equivalents. But as they become more mass-market and there are more secondhand vehicles available, the gap is narrowing. It’s worth checking out the EVs available within your budget – you may be pleasantly surprised. Whether you’re looking to buy new, secondhand or to lease, Auto Trader is a great place to start and its search function will help you find the best EV for your family.

6. Charging on long journeys needn’t be stressful

Many motorists can see the appeal of EVs for local trips but are concerned about longer journeys. However, many EVs now have a range of 200 miles or more, and some rapid chargers can add up to 200 miles in 30 minutes. Erin says, ‘Stopping to charge sounds like an inconvenience, but on long journeys with young children you have to stop for rest breaks anyway, so you can combine both at motorway service stations.’ Auto Trader has a useful guide to help you find charging points across the country.

7. No more pestering at the petrol station

Not only are conventional fuel stations smelly and congested, they’re also challenging for families. ‘If you have to take the children into the shop to pay, chances are, you’ll be nagged to buy sweets,’ says Erin. ‘Charging at home is so much simpler!’
