BYD’s new Denza brand is launching a Porsche Taycan rival

Denza has officially launched the Z9GT, marking the arrival of BYD’s luxury arm in Europe.

Sales of the premium shooting brake will commence in the coming weeks at Denza branded dealerships.

Both electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains will be offered, with the car offering high levels of performance along with long-distance capability.

At launch, the electric Z9GT will offer a triple motor system with a 1,156PS power output and a zero-62mph time of 2.7 seconds. This will place it firmly as a rival for high-end versions of the Audi e-Tron GT and Porsche Taycan. A 122kWh battery gives a range of up to 372 miles and Denza is also planning a Long Range variant with less power that is capable of 500 miles between charges.

Denza has developed a Flash Charging system with a power of up to 1,500kW. It enables 10%-70% of battery capacity in only five minutes, and from 10%-97% in just nine minutes.

The plug-in hybrid, known as the Z9GT DM, pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharges petrol engine with a triple motor system for a maximum output of 776PS. Acceleration from 0-62mph happens in 3.6 seconds. The petrol engine exists mainly to keep the 64kWh battery charged. Electric-only range for the DM is 126 miles and the battery supports Denza’s Flash Charging for a 10%-70% charge in five minutes.

To support the Z9GT’s performance, the car has a number of advanced chassis features to improve handling and dynamics: air suspension with two levels of stiffness, independent rear wheel steering and an advanced drive computer to tie everything together. These functions combine not only for better driveability but also to enhance day-to-day practicality. Parking is simplified as the rear wheels can adjust to support tighter manoeuvring and the powertrain and suspension can react to a tyre blowout and make necessary adjustments to maximise stability.

Premium materials are used throughout the car’s interior to enhance the luxury feel. The front seats have heating, cooling and massage functions, as well as active side bolsters that are linked to the car’s suspension. A 17.3-inch central display that ‘floats’ in front of the fascia is complemented by a pair of 13.2-inch screens – one for the driver’s information and the other to allow the front passenger to interact with entertainment. There’s also a 50-inch augmented-reality head-up display, along with the option of screens in the doors that show high-definition images from digital side mirrors, eliminating traditional blind spots.

More details, including pricing, are set to be announced in the coming weeks. The Z9GT is being launched in both three-motor EV and DM guise, in a single trim level. Customers will also receive one year of free access to the brand’s Flash Charging network.
