The cars will be available from this summer as part of the Plug In Suffolk Car Club initiative.
Each of the following locations will have two cars stationed: Ann Street and Norfolk Road in Ipswich, Norwich Road in Lowestoft, Cannon Street in Bury St Edmunds, Crown Street in Stowmarket, Castle Street in Woodbridge, Granary Road in Newmarket, Station Yard Car Park in Needham Market, Maiden Way Car Park in Hadleigh, and Girling Street Car Park in Sudbury.
A further location in Leiston is under review.
People living in or visiting Suffolk can book the cars via Co Wheels using the phone, website, or app
Richard Falconer, head of mobility at Co Wheels, said: “We’re excited to expand the Co Wheels network across Suffolk.
“This expansion marks an important step in our mission to provide sustainable and flexible transport options to communities across the UK.”
Funded by Suffolk’s public sector organisations and overseen by Suffolk County Council, the project also benefits from additional charge point funding through the Department for Transport’s On-Street Residential ChargePoint Scheme (ORCS).
Councillor Gerald Kelly, chair of the Suffolk Councils’ Environment Portfolio Holders’ Group, said: “I am thrilled that drivers across Suffolk will be able to access this new fleet of all-electric vehicles.
“Not only do these cars provide a cost-effective method of transport for residents in the surrounding areas, but they also help to keep those rarely needed second petrol and diesel vehicles off the roads which improves air quality for all.”
An initial 18-month trial will assess interest in expanding the scheme countywide.
The initiative is part of a broader plan to transform Suffolk into a net-zero county.
