The front-running mid-size BMW sedan in 2024 is the 5 Series, a model that blends the best of the brand’s luxury and performance. Starting at $57,900 for the base 530i, the 5 Series receives a fresh new look, despite only being last updated in 2021. With the new update comes BMW’s Drive 8.5 user interface, which includes a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen display connected to a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster on a singular curved panel.

Alongside the 530i variant is the 540i, which comes with xDrive all-wheel drive and costs $64,900. The 530i can be selected with an all-wheel-drive driveline, costing $60,200. It has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 255 horsepower.

While this is a solid number, the 2024 5 Series 540i is powered by a larger 3.0-liter inline-six, increasing the output to 375 horsepower. Both trims benefit from a 48-volt mild hybrid system. While Europe gets the all-new 5 Series Touring model, which, unfortunately, isn’t expected to arrive Stateside any time soon.

Although the 2024 5 Series receives the lowest predicted reliability score of 55/100, this doesn’t mean that the mid-size luxury sedan is unreliable. Moving down two sizes from the 5 Series is the 3 Series, which received its most recent update only last year. This means that for 2024, the BMW 3 Series features all the cutting-edge technology that was introduced last year as well as the revamped exterior design. For the base 330i model, prices start at $44,500, and $46,500 for the 330i xDrive all-wheel-drive version.

The 2024 3 Series 330i is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, producing 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. If you want some extra power, the M340i’s 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine can produce 382 horsepower. The upgraded M340i starts at $57,600 in 2024.

The smaller 2024 BMW 3 Series sees a slight improvement over the 5 Series, receiving a score of 58/100 as per Consumer Reports. The 2024 3 series does have one recall to its name, which was a result of a loose steering gear increasing the risk of a crash.

On average, you can expect to spend $748 annually on maintenance, according to RepairPal. This keeps the compact sedan competitive with its rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which only costs one dollar more per year. 4 2024 BMW 2 Series

The smallest BMW car available in 2024 is the 2 Series, which is also the first on this list to be offered as both a sedan and a coupe. The base models of either version have starting prices that are extremely close: the Gran Coupe sedan starts at $38,400, whereas the Coupe model starts at just $400 more.

While the 2 Series Gran Coupe offers the practicality of the sedan, the Coupe model offers more power as standard. Both are powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four, which produces 255 horsepower for the Gran Coupe, increasing to 255 horsepower in the two-door Coupe model. More power is available with the more expensive M235i sedan and M240i coupe, both of which are toppled by the mighty M2 coupe.

Once again improving on its larger sibling, Consumer Reports predicts that the 2024 BMW 2 Series will be more reliable than most new cars, with a score of 61/100. The 2 Series also has one recall so far, caused by the same loose steering gear issue that affected the 3 Series.

3 2024 BMW 4 Series

As for pricing, the 430i sedan starts at $48,300, being the cheapest model in the range. The more potent M440i raises the price to $61,050. Moving to the coupe versions, the 430i Coupe starts at $50,700 and $764,250 for the M440i Coupe. The long-standing M4 has also received the same updates for 2024, starting at $79,100.

Reliability

Although the 2024 BMW 4 Series has less data available than other cars, it still receives a predicted reliability score of 63/100 from Consumer Reports, making it one of the most reliable BMWs on sale. This makes the 4 Series more reliable than the average new car in 2024.

2 2024 BMW 7 Series

In 2024, BMW’s leading sedan model is the full-size 7 Series. The largest model in the Munich-Base brand’s current range is also the leading luxury car, competing directly with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. While the all-electric i7 tends to garner the most attention, the gas-powered 740i and 760i models don’t diminish in quality in any area.

For the base 2024 BMW 740i, prices start at $96,400, making it the most expensive new BMW car by quite some margin. For the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, you’ll need to pay £3,000 more. The top-spec 760i sedan breaches the $100,000 mark, starting at $121,300 in 2024. The major difference between the two trims is their engines, with the 740i using a 3.0-liter six-cylinder and the 760i using a 4.4-liter V-8.

Reliability

Unfortunately, the new 2024 BMW 7 Series doesn’t have a predicted reliability score yet from Consumer Reports. However, we do know that there have been two recalls for the 2024 7 Series so far. The first was caused by an inoperative hands-on detection system failing to detect when hands aren’t on the steering wheel and, therefore, not engaging the emergency stopping assistant system. The second was caused by a loss of power brake assist.

1 2024 BMW 8 Series

Offering far more options in 2024 is the BMW 8 Series, which is essentially the sporty alternative to the 7 Series, without forgetting to include high levels of luxury. Coming in both coupe and sedan forms, the 8 Series provides the same driving dynamics as the smaller models with the size of the 7 Series (albeit slightly smaller). Both the Coupe and Gran Coupe 840i models start at $90,800, which increases to $106,300 for the M850i trim.

Stepping up once more, the M8 Competition starts at $138,800, producing 617 horsepower from its 4.4-liter V-8. However, to unlock the most power available, you’ll have to go for the Alpina B8. The Alpina brand takes the M8 Competition Gran Coupe and increases the power output to 621 horsepower. The B8 also improves on the overall luxury and comfort of the M8 to justify its price tag of $151,500.

Like the 7 Series, the BMW 8 Series has yet to receive a predicted reliability score from Consumer Reports. While overall data is limited, CarEdge estimates that the average maintenance costs over ten years will be $14,548.
