JLR to unveil Range Rover Electric globally later this year, with India among the early launch markets. Over 62,000 global interests logged, including 400 from India. Local production, pricing impact, and future EV plans across Range Rover, Jaguar, Defender, and Discovery also discussed.

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is readying the Range Rover Electric, which will be unveiled later this year with deliveries slated to start next year. It will be first launched in the UK and neighbouring markets, and India will be among the next few countries to get the car.

“We are in the final testing phase of the Range Rover Electric, and later this year we will be in a position to tell you launch timelines, but whenever it launches globally, India will be one of the first markets to get it,” Martin Limpert, the global managing director of Range Rover, told FE. “More than 62,000 people have already expressed interest in the car – mostly from the US and Europe – and almost 400 people from India have also expressed interest.”

He added that there is a huge desirability for the ‘Range Rover’ brand in India – among actors, businesspersons, sportspeople, and others. “The Indian economy is growing, and the number of high net-worth individuals is expected to grow from 900,000 right now to 1.2 million by the turn of the decade, so there is a huge market for us,” Limpert said.

On whether it will be made in India, Limpert added that the company is trying to understand the finer details of the India-UK FTA, and then it will decide which all products to get to India via which route – completely knocked down (CKD) or completely built up (CBU).

Last year in May, JLR India started local manufacturing of two models – Range Rover and Range Rover Sport – and was able to reduce prices of these models by 18-20%. “Since we launched these locally-made cars in India, their sales have increased by 2.5 times,” Limpert  said. “Those of the Range Rover increased by 72%, and of the Range Rover Sport by 42% – in FY25 over FY24.”

But as far as making India an export base for the world is concerned, Limpert said there are no such plans. “We have enough manufacturing in England for all our global markets.”

JLR now has four distinct brands – Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar. The Range Rover Electric will be its first EV, followed by Jaguar Type 00 (which will be displayed in India on June 14, and likely launched later next year).

In 2018, the automaker launched the Jaguar I-Pace – its first-ever electric car – which was discontinued in December 2024, to make way for all-new Jaguar models. Limpert said that while the Range Rover brand will have ICE, hybrid, and EV powertrains, Jaguar will be a wholly electric brand. “In due course of time, even the Defender and Discovery brands will have electric powertrains, but it’s too early to talk about them right now,” he said.
