Key Takeaways

  • Lincoln isn’t rushing into the electric vehicle race, focusing on customer needs first.
  • Slow growth in EV sales led Lincoln to slow the rollout of new EVs.
  • A premium, luxury experience remains a priority for Lincoln, with EVs coming when the time is right.

The automotive industry is racing to shift to electric vehicles with a steady stream of new models from trucks to SUVs, but Lincoln is in no rush to join that race. While electrification is a part of its strategy, it’s more focused on meeting customer needs with the right vehicle at the right time.

Lincoln has shown off a few EV concepts, including the futuristic Star, which made its debut in 2022. Back then, Lincoln planned to have three new EVs by 2025 and a fourth by 2026. The expectation was for half of the brand’s global volume to be all-electric by next year.

Fast-forward to today and the pace of electric vehicle sales growth has slowed. Lincoln even ditched the hybrid engine on the upcoming 2025 Aviator. Meanwhile, the US government has revised its rules for meeting Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards to make it easier for automakers to continue building gas vehicles while slowly introducing EVs into the mix.

2024 Lincoln Nautilus First Drive Review: A Mixed Bag You Might Love

The all-new Lincoln Nautilus gets a lot of things right; you might be let down in some areas, but it won’t be in interior comfort.

This is good news for Lincoln as it allows for hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and EVs rather than going all-in on something that might not be a priority for its customers. Especially for those who use their SUVs for towing, driving range becomes an issue, which makes EVs a tough sell.

Take the 2024 Lincoln Nautilus, which just made its debut. It shows off a slick redesign that includes a massive 48-inch display screen that spans the width of the dashboard along with a luxurious interior. At the recent media drive in Palm Springs, California, the focus was on the extensive technology offered by the Nautilus along with its fancy Lincoln Rejuvenate seats and new digital scents to freshen up the cabin.

The impressive list of available features includes a 28-speaker Revel stereo system, 24-way adjustable front seats, heated rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof, but getting your Lincoln Nautilus as an EV is not an option. There’s a gas or hybrid engine, but that’s it.

This isn’t an oversight on Lincoln’s part. It’s intentional. It’s all about what the customer wants and from Lincoln, that means a premium luxury experience. The introduction of new EVs will come when the time, and the vehicle, is right for Lincoln’s customers.
