A Union County man was sentenced to more than three years in prison for his role in an interstate luxury-car theft ring that targeted Mercedes, BMWs, Maseratis, Porsches and more, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said Thursday.
Malik Baker, 30, of Vauxhall previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to transport stolen vehicles in interstate commerce and another count of receiving stolen vehicles that crossed state lines, authorities said.
Three other conspirators previously pleaded guilty to related charges and two of the three men have been sentenced.
Starting in July 2019, Baker and the other defendants conspired to steal at least 10 luxury vehicles from New York, Connecticut and New Jersey and hide them in Irvington, according to documents filed in the case.
Some of the stolen cars included a 2017 BMW Alpina and a 2019 Rolls Royce from Hewlett Bay Park, New York; a 2019 Mercedes Maybach from Quogue, New York; and a 2017 BMW M4 from Marlton, authorities said.
On some occasions the defendants used stolen cars to steal other cars, including one night when they used a stolen Maserati Gran Turisimo from Manalapan to steal a Range Rover and a Porsche Cayenne, authorities said. When police tried to stop the Maserati, the defendants drove the car directly into a police vehicle and escaped in another stolen vehicle, authorities said.
Investigators later found one of the stolen cars in a shipping container in Port Newark headed to Ghana, Africa, according to documents filed in the case.
Baker was sentenced to three years supervised release in addition to his prison term.
Baker’s whole family was at the sentencing, his attorney Michael V. Calabro said Thursday. Calabro said that he asked the court for a more lenient sentence, but that Judge Esther Salas was “very thorough and fair in her decision.”
