In 2024 Red Bull and Adrian Newey has the task of improving near perfection and their answer, the RB20, has been revealed.
Last year Red Bull’s RB19 became one of the most dominant ever, joining the MP4/4 as the only cars to win all-but one Grand Prix of the entire season.
Interestingly the RB20 that will be once again steered by three-time world champion Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez has had some significant changes in the sidepod area, including some of Mercedes’ previous design ideas.
Whilst Newey’s successful undercut philosophy remains under the inlet and start of the sidepod, there are some notable differences.
Long cooling gulleys run the length of the engine cover from the halo to the rear end in very similar style to what was seen on the Mercedes WA14 last year. The other similarity is the vertical side pot radiator inlet.
But the front of the car is much more reminiscent of the RB19, while the livery itself remains the same as it has done since 2016.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said the RB20 is an “evolution” of last year’s dominator.
“It’s an evolution of last year’s car, obviously, and it’s our 20th version,” he said.
“The guys haven’t been (sitting still), it’s not conservative, and you can see they’ve been quite aggressive in certain areas and still pushing the boundaries.
“I’m conscious that our opponents are still pushing very hard and I’ve seen a few cars that have been released that look similar in theme to what we launched with last year.
“You can see that all the men and women behind the scenes have been working very hard (on the RB20) and some of the detail on the car is absolutely exquisite.”
The 2024 Formula 1 launch season is now complete with testing coming up at Bahrain on February 21-23, which will be broadcast on Fox Sports/Kayo.
