Google is adding AI capabilities in its apps and services. The company introduced AI messages summaries for its in-car infotainment app, Android Auto, earlier this year, and recently, a member of The Times of India tech team got the feature. Those who own new cars or have an infotainment system that supports Android Auto can update the app and use the feature.
What are AI message summaries
AI messages summaries were announced by Google earlier this year, and the feature quickly shortens the long messages to give a gist of the text. Previously, Google Assistant used to read the whole thing aloud, making it difficult for drivers to follow or understand the full message.
The feature popped up in Android Auto’s settings quickly for some markets and we recently got it in our car infotainment system with Android Auto 11.5 update.
How AI message summaries work in Android Auto
After installing the latest version of Android Auto, the app will notify users on their phones about message summaries. Some users may also get an option to enable message summaries on their car’s infotainment system itself.
Summaries are only for long messages (over 40 words) and if enabled, Google Assistant will still read short messages aloud, and shorter messages will be read aloud. Those who use the AI summaries feature, Google will warn you the summary might be slightly off.
The feature will also allow users to either send an AI generated answer, or they can even customise a reply before sending.
We found that, in multiple cases, the AI-generated summaries were without some specific details but it was pretty close to bringing forward the overall meaning of the message.
