The all-electric Renault has been voted WhatCar? Car of the Year Award for 2025.

The car is the third-cheapest EV in the UK, starting at £22,995.

This price point, combined with its stylish design and innovative features, helped it stand out against fierce competition in the electric car market.

The original Renault 5, produced between 1972 and 1996, revolutionised hatchback design in its heyday.

Now, its electric reincarnation is poised to do the same for EV’s blending nostalgia with modern engineering.

Judges commended Renault for retaining the charm of the classic model while integrating technology that rivals luxury cars.

Steve Huntingford, Editor of WhatCar? says: “Renault has clearly thrown everything at the car, resulting in something that’s comfortable, good to drive, very well-priced, and equipped with an infotainment system that shames those in some far more expensive machines.”

Powered by a 12bhp electric motor, the Renault 5 offers a top speed of 93mph and accelerates from 0-52mph in just 9 seconds.

While not built for blistering speed, the car excels as a practical city vehicle, boasting low running costs, no tailpipe emissions, and up to 250 miles of range with the larger 52kWh battery option.

It’s quirky design also includes French-inspired touches, like a wicker basket to hold a baguette, and national flag motifs on the seats, adding to its charm.

Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive expressed his excitement over the win, calling the R5 ” a breakthrough EV that people will want regardless of its powertrain.2

Renault’s success marks its fourth overall win at the WhatCar? Awards, with previous victories dating back to 1997.
