Driving for one of the rideshare services, like Lyft or Uber, can be a great way to pick up some extra side cash, or even provide a way to self-employment as a fulltime job. And while it doesn’t take much more than a reliable car and a smartphone to get started, investing in a few key accessories can increase your efficiency on the job, while also making it more enjoyable and helpful to ensure your own safety.
To put together our list of essentials, we talked with experienced rideshare drivers and other professionals like Harry Campbell, founder of The Rideshare Guy blog, and his senior contributor Sergio Avedian for their tips, to find out what they’ve learned are the most useful types of tools for a mobile office. Next, we looked at lots of products in each of the relevant categories, compared features, costs, reviews, prices and other considerations to determine which are the best choices.
The result is our list of some of the must-have accessories for new rideshare drivers, to start you on the road to being your own boss. These items are mostly focused on safety and convenience, but we have a separate list of top comfort products to invest in as a rideshare driver.
As Avedian, a longtime driver, told us in an interview, his top accessories are connected with safety. “No $6 trip is worth my life,” he said. To that end, his number one tool, especially for those driving at night and with potentially intoxicated passengers, is a dash cam. He advised setting one up even if you’re only driving 10 hours a week. “I know 99.99% of trips are fine, but I need evidence if something bad happens.”
