Sleep tech has come a long way in the last several years, with new innovations in the industry that improve quality of sleep for the millions of Americans who live with sleep troubles, from white noise machines that promote sleepiness to eye-massaging goggles that target migraines and help promote relaxation. While there are some gimmicky products featured across the internet that likely don’t live up to their hype, I rounded up a list of the best sleep tech gadgets you can incorporate into your routine for better, more restful slumber.
I’ve personally tested several of these products highlighted in my roundup for the best sleep technology, but also gave nod to sleep devices that have garnered recognition and top-rated reviews from customers who have purchased them. For improved sleep and relaxation, continue on with the best sleep tech available today.
Best Sleep Tech Products: Targeted Relief
While the brand is popularly known for its compact and mobile Therabody massage gun, the Therabody SmartGoggles deserve recognition for their ability to relieve migraines and promote relaxation using heat and massage therapy. I was skeptical of the claims at first, but now my partner and I both use them when a headache hits after a long day. While you can’t sleep with them through the night like a regular sleep mask, you can incorporate it into your nighttime routine to unwind, relieve stress and reduce tension in your head and temples.
Hot sleepers rejoice, as the Chilipad Dock Pro is an effective, budget-friendly solution to sleeping cooler without buying a new mattress or keeping your thermostat set to ultra cool all year round. It comes complete with a Chilipad topper and functions like a regular mattress topper that goes over your bed, but it’s individually sized. The topper attaches to the Dock Pro Control unit, the thermoregulatory system that propels the cooling function, and is controlled via the Sleepme app from your smartphone. There you can adjust temperature and set timers to automatically adjust through the night. For even more temperature relief, see our list of the best cooling pillows.
Best Sleep Tech: Relaxing Sounds
As one of my most beloved sleep tech, I use the Restore 2 Sunset Alarm Clock each night to lull me to bed and in the morning to gently wake me up with a gradual, sunset-esque glow that triggers my natural sleep-wake cycle. Before bed, it works as a sound machine and omits soothing sounds to help promote relaxation (I listen to the campfire setting).
Then, set a wake up timer for the morning and a start time for when you want the light to begin gradually illuminating. Mine gradually gets brighter for 10 minutes until its peak at alarm time. Use the Hatch Sleep app to customize everything from the sounds you listen to, to the color of the light. It’s not required, but you can subscribe to Hatch+ for access to a larger sound library and other helpful sleep tools for $4.99 a month.
Sound is usually most disrupting for sleep when it’s abrupt and alarming, like a loud bump in the night or a suddenly triggered car alarm outside. White noise can help drown external, unpleasant sound with a stream of staticky, blurred sound that mimics the crashing of ocean waves or a rushing river. One study from 2017 found that white noise decreased the amount of time it took from turning out the lights to hitting stage two REM sleep by 38%. See our detailed roundup of the best white noise machines for a complete list of our top favorites.
Achieve better sleep straight from your current smartphone with the Better Sleep app, a library with hundreds of sleep sounds, from white noise to the sound of rainfall and guided meditations. Listening to soothing sounds and meditations before bed can help promote relaxation and reduce stress, making it easier for you to doze off to sleep. The app offers a seven-day free trial and costs $60 a year once the trial expires. Check our our list of other sleep apps for a complete roundup of top-rated options.
The Perytong Sleep Headphones are a budget-friendly answer for people who want to listen to music or soothing sounds before bed, without the hassle of earbuds that tend to easily fall out of your ear. It functions as a headband with two small, Oreo-sized speakers on the side of your head for audio. Its rechargeable battery lasts up to 10 hours and wirelessly pairs with your device with bluetooth. The headband is washable, but don’t forget to remove the bluetooth speakers. It’s also available in a wide range of colors to fit your personal style. One thing to keep in mind is it does make you sleep warmer during the night. For hot sleepers and those who want to consider other picks, see our list of the best headphones for sleep.
Best Sleep Tech: Sleep Tracking
Although they have good intentions and provide valuable insights, chunky wearable sleep trackers can disrupt sleep more than help. The Oura Ring sets those worries to ease with a sleek design made with durable titanium that doubles as a sleep tracker and attractive piece of jewelry. Whether you sleep on your side, stomach or back you can sleep comfortably while the ring senses movements, body temperature, tracks sleep patterns and delivers insights based on the data it collects. Use the data it provides to identify possible sleep disruptors, unhealthy sleep patterns or share with your doctor to receive expert insights.
For individuals with pain or a co-sleeper with completely different sleep needs, the Sleep Number Climate360 is a good investment. It’s a mattress, adjustable bed frame and non-wearable sleep tracker all-in-one, the ultimate smart bed for temperature regulated sleep. It connects to Sleep Number’s SleepIQ app where you can adjust the bed’s firmness level, temperature and mattress positioning. It’s the most technologically advanced bed I’ve ever tested and seems to address many of the problems people have when it comes to getting a good night’s rest. For those interested in more details, I tested the Sleep Number Climate360 for 30 days and wrote a full-length mattress review.
Another dual-functioning device, the Google Nest Hub is not only a smart home device, but also a non-wearable sleep tracker. It senses different metrics, including your movements, heart rate, snoring and room temperature, right from your bedside table. Wake up and ask, “Google, how did I sleep last night?” for a summary of your sleep data or access it directly from the device. And with an auto brightness setting that dims the display at night, you don’t have to worry about ambient light messing with your sleep.
