On February 17, the jail staff seized a smartphone with a SIM card, a keypad phone, a TV remote with keyboard, a spy-cam pen, pen drives, Bluetooth headphones, speakers, and a smart watch from the NSA cell housing Singh and nine of his associates.

On Friday, Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police V V Rakesh Reddy said the investigation into the source of these unauthorised items revealed a “nexus” between jail officials and the detainees.

The Superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail, where Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh and his associates are lodged for nearly a year, has been arrested after contraband items, including a smartphone, were found in their cell last month.

Superintendent Nipen Das was arrested Friday after being taken into police custody Thursday and the charges against him include a section of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for advocating, abetting, advising or inciting the commission of “any unlawful activity”.
