Modern smartphones use proximity sensors for much more than just turning off screens during calls. These advanced sensors, powered by IR emitters and receivers, detect nearby objects like your hand or ear to trigger smart responses. Today’s devices use them for gesture recognition like skipping music with a wave, auto-brightness via ambient light detection, and even AI-based call handling that mutes calls when you stop speaking. Some phones also deactivate touch inputs and switch AI assistants to silent mode during calls.
