STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Recent years have seen a rise in the popularity of pet travel to the point where some pet owners would not leave the house without their animals. There are now fewer restrictions on pets traveling with their owners on buses, trains, and other modes of transportation. More hotels are now allowing cats, dogs, and birds inside. Many don’t care what kind of pet you bring as long as it stays within the weight restrictions.
While some have the luxury of having a family member or friend care for the pet so they can stay in their environment, others opt for boarding their pet. The latter is more expensive, but they’ll be able to socialize. If you choose to bring your fur child with you, several options exist. Before I share a few resources, let me show you some adoptable pets who would love to meet you.

- 37% of pet parents have chosen NOT to travel so they can stay home with their dogs.
- 38% of pet parents have driven instead of flying to their destination
- 10% of pet parents have hidden their dogs in their luggage to sneak them into a hotel
- 3% of pet parents have tried to disguise their dog as a baby when boarding a plane (seriously!)
HELPFUL TRAVEL APPS
Bring Fido: This top pet travel app will assist you whether you are looking for a pet-friendly hotel, dog park, beach, or other attraction while on vacation. This is a great travel resource for you and your fur baby and a global service.
Bark Happy: This location-based app is awesome!!! It puts a dog-friendly world right at your fingertips. Locating dog-friendly parks, restaurants, and lodging are just a few things you’ll enjoy with this app. Get social – find events and dogs nearby for a playdate or to give a wag.
Trip Advisor: Whether on a trip or planning one, you should have this app ready on your phone. There are over 350 million reviews on this site. Although it is not specifically a dog app, it’s an app that can provide you with tons of pet-friendly information. I always check TripAdvisor when planning a trip.
Pet First Aid: If you’re bringing your fur baby on vacation, you should have this app readily available. It’s loaded with information for emergency medical situations, first aid, general health issues, demonstration videos (including dog CPR), a section to store your fur baby’s information, follow-up quizzes, and lots of advice. I highly recommend this app. It’s a must-have!
Rover: Whether you are on vacation or at home, if you are looking for a dog sitter, this app is perfect! More than 65,000 pet sitters and dog walkers are listed, making them the largest network available. On the app, you can connect with nearby sitters, pay them through the app, and get photo updates while you’re away. The platform offers insurance, 24/7 support, background checks, and a reservation guarantee.

Meet DC, an 8-week-old, 11-pound (as of 4/29), adorable Border Collie/Husky mix. This delightful puppy is soft, sweet, cuddly and super loving. He is great with other dogs and friendly.

Animal Care Centers of New York City is open for adoptions of dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and rabbits at 3139 Veterans Road West on Monday and Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Meet Katie…
Meet Katie!
Katie is the kind of cat who redefines the word quirky in the most delightful way. At just 7 months old and a petite 4 lbs, this mixed-color domestic shorthair is packed with personality, affection, and just the right amount of chaos.
She’s playful, wildly curious, and incredibly affectionate—throwing herself headfirst into cuddles with no regard for where she might land (yes, even in the toilet once). Whether she’s lounging like a queen, hiding in cabinets like a fuzzy spy, or chasing anything that moves, Katie brings joy and laughter wherever she goes.
Her favorite pastimes include curling up in your lap for hours, watching life unfold from her carrier like it’s premium cable, investigating the mysteries of dogdom (she was deeply unsure about her foster dog sibling at first, but now they coexist peacefully), and offering her belly, feet, and face for pets—and even rewarding you with a thumbs-lick for your efforts!
She didn’t seem to know she was a cat at first, or maybe she just thought her foster sister wasn’t. Either way, she observed her with the kind of quiet fascination usually reserved for alien encounters. Katie’s got a tiny squeaky meow, a lovely purr, the softest fur, and a tail with a color pattern so random it looks like it was added during a game of “Pin the Tail on the Donkey.”
Katie would thrive in a home that can give her a balance of cozy lap time and space to explore. She adjusts well to new situations—as long as she’s loved, admired, and allowed to be the endearing little oddball that she is.

Kittens are only adopted in pairs or to homes with other friendly, social pets. They are very social by nature and need to be with other pets for their socialization.

This is Gary…
Gary is a sweet and energetic guy who is truly a ball of fun. Whenever he greets you, you will be smitten by his cute, excited wiggles. This affectionate guy will simply melt into your arms when you give him pets and belly rubs. Other than his people, his favorite thing in the world are his toys — he’ll happily throw them around to entertain himself. Gary is also super confident in the great outdoors and walks really well on a leash — he’d love to go on adventures with you.
