Cats Shut Down SFA – Abilene Christian University Athletics

NACOGDOCHES – Abilene Christian got a pair of goals from Chayse Thorn and picked up its first conference win of the season with a 2-0 road win at Stephen F. Austin on Sunday.

After a lengthy weather delay, ACU and Thorn got a goal in each half and the Wildcats got their seventh shutout of the season.

“A fantastic effort, response and win against a talented SFA team!” said ACU Head Coach Stephen Salas. “Another shutout and two special goals from Chayse. Our resiliency and poise showed through the adverse conditions of the two-hour rain delay on the road. Very proud of this team; of how hard they worked for each other and a higher purpose. We created a lot of dangerous chances and moved the ball well.”

Thorn scored with an assist from Peyton Hill in the 25th minute and the Cats took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Thorn scored an unassisted goal in the 86th minute.

The goals put Thorn at 11 for the season and marked her fifth multi-goal outing of the season. Thorn bedeviled the Jacks all day, putting six of her seven shots on frame. Hill also put two of her four shots on goal. Emma Nylund had two shots and Taylor Denn, Amelia Leggett and Lox Neves had one each.

Savanna Alba went the distance in goal for her first solo shutout, recording two saves. Alba also has three combo shutouts this season.

The ACU backline held SFA to 10 shots.

The Wildcats honor their seniors and alumni in the next contest, Sunday, Oct. 5, when they host Tarleton State at 5 p.m.

“It’s going to be a great weekend at home honoring our seniors with family, alumni, and friends on campus next Sunday,” said Salas.

ACU is 6-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
