Dungeons & Dragons is well-known for its extensive library of deadly monsters. However, you might be surprised to learn that there are quite a few cute and cuddly creatures in this library as well. We could even go so far as to say that some of these monsters would make great pets.
Dungeons And Dragons: 14 Most Iconic Monsters
Dungeons & Dragons is home to some of the most iconic monsters in all of gaming, and these are their best creatures.
While dogs and house cats are great pets in their own right, the monsters listed here have some rather unique features that might just give them a leg up on your traditional animal companions. Of course, that’s assuming that you could properly train them in the first place.
10 Flumph
A Stinky Alien Jellyfish
This small and mysterious aberration is a floating jellyfish with a mouth and eye stalks atop its head. Despite its rather foreign appearance, the flumph is a surprisingly good-natured and even helpful creature to encounter. Their telepathy allows them to speak with you as an equal, and they just so happen to be quite knowledgeable about several subjects.
Judging from the creature’s proficiency in history, religion, and arcana, it’s safe to say that the flumph would be the perfect companion for anyone who considers themselves the academic type. Unfortunately, their tendrils are covered in an acidic goop that burns to the touch, and they’ve got a reputation for especially stinky bouts of flatulence. We can’t all be perfect.
9 Cranium Rat
The Ultimate Lab Rat
While these creatures were first created by mind flayers, and sometimes serve as scouts for mind flayer colonies, there’s no denying that all rodents have a cuteness factor. Even if their brain happens to be slightly exposed. Cranium rats are even smarter than your typical rat, and they can communicate base emotions telepathically.
Be warned though: if you take on too many cranium rats as pets, they may just form a hive mind. Once this happens, the rats communicate as a single creature that refers to itself as a collective using pronouns like ‘we.’ One cranium rat at a time, please.
8 Almiraj
A Bunicorn
If you’ve ever desired a cross between a unicorn and a rabbit, look no further than the almiraj. These fluffy little friends are especially perceptive and sneaky, so they’ll probably beat you handily if you decide to play hide and seek with them.
Like typical rabbits, they prefer to live in underground holes. While their unicorn-like spiral horns are undoubtedly cute, they can also be quite dangerous if the almiraj feels threatened. Who wouldn’t want their very own guard bunny?
7 Space Swine
That ‘When Pigs Fly’ Expression Just Got A Lot Less Useful
These pigs have had way too many Red Bulls and can now soar through the skies using their beautiful feathery wings. Like most swine, they have a knack for survival, enjoy eating tubers, and will notice you coming from quite a distance away.
Dungeons And Dragons: 10 Of The Weirdest Monsters In Monsters Of The Multiverse
There are plenty of curious monsters in the D&D pantheon, but the Monsters of the Multiverse sourcebook brings together some of the weirdest.
More than just house pets, space swine are perfectly fit to be encased in half-plate armor and ridden into battle. Alternatively, the armor is great pet protection for your child’s next space swine polo match. Some say this monster is the pet that keeps on providing. Once your space swine passes away, its carcass can serve as a high-protein meal for the entire family.
6 Pseudodragon
Fun-Sized Dragons
Typically a favorite of magically inclined individuals, the pseudodragon is great at protecting those who can’t defend themselves. These aloof yet rambunctious little dragons take after their bigger brethren in that they can easily be won over with gifts of baubles.
They are armed with stinging tails capable of putting even the most dangerous opponents right to sleep. Lastly, pseudodragons have a limited level of communication that they manage through telepathy. While they can’t truly speak, they are fond of sharing their emotions with their masters: even to the point of vocalizing the noises of other pets that they’ve encountered.
5 Chwinga
Cute In A Creepy Kind Of Way
These elemental spirits tend to stick to themselves; however, they are deeply fascinated by people. Consequently, you’ve likely been stalked by one before even if you’ve never actually laid eyes on the doll-like creatures. Seeing as they’re elementals, Chwingas are especially easy to take care of because they don’t need food, water, air, or sleep.
If a chwinga takes a liking to you, it may see fit to bless you with a supernatural charm that will make life just a tad bit easier. Beyond that, they are also innately magical beings who are at home in the natural world. Their magic will make staying outside easy breezy. Lovers of the outdoors can do no better than befriending one of these curious and quiet dudes.
4 Wynling
The Cutest Ones Are Always The Most Trouble
While these squirrel-like creatures with the wings of a bat may appear harmless at first glance, make no mistake. Wynlings are not for first-time pet owners. These fey creatures are as chaotic as they come and especially prone to playing pranks on their owners including the temporary theft of important items like your wallet, keys, and phone.
On top of being naturally stealthy, they are also capable of turning invisible along with your necessary day-to-day accoutrements. While a pain to try and domesticate, no other monster can match the Wynling’s playful nature. Experienced pet owners looking for a challenge will find their equal in these creatures.
3 Brigganock
“When I Was Your Age…”
The brigganock is yet another fey creature. Instead of taking to the sky like the Wynling, these gopher-looking monsters prefer to dig deep into the earth. The path for their tunnel-making is lit by their very own souls, which manifest as a pale, orb-shaped light that follows them around.
Dungeons And Dragons: 14 Monsters That Would Make A Good Big Bad That Are Not Dragons
Dragons are boring, all hail… Lamia?
Brigganocks aren’t digging for no good reason either. They are constantly in search of wish stones created by mortals who make wishes when blowing on birthday candles, offering coins to wells, and more. Interior designers in particular will find the brigganock good company as they have a penchant for decorating their homes with the well-intentioned wish stones they dig up.
2 Campestri
Literal Magic Mushrooms
These tiny mushroom friends greatly enjoy the music of every genre and skill level. While they can’t truly speak, they do understand language and are even capable of mimicking the words that are spoken around them. They are also easy to feed as their diet consists primarily of salt.
Besides their love of music, campestri can emit spores that incapacitate anyone brave enough to allow them within arm’s reach. Musicians, music aficionados, and those who have trouble sleeping will all find their perfect companions in these infallibly happy plants.
1 Displacer Beast Kitten
Why Own A Tiger When You Can Own A Teleporting Tiger?
The displacer beast kitten is arguably the cutest monster you can own. Their six legs, tentacles, and ability to project an illusion of themselves will have them tugging at your heartstrings from dawn until dusk. Sadly, some good things never last.
A fully grown displacer beast is an apex predator that loves nothing more than the thrill of the hunt. While it is possible to convince a displacer beast to call you its master, they only do so as long as the beast is getting something out of the bargain. Namely, the opportunity to feed its drive to kill. You’re best off hoping your kitten doesn’t grow up too fast.
