CORK band The Frank and Walters have revealed how Noel Gallagher once blamed them for the death of his goldfish.
Back in 1992, the future Oasis star was working as a roadie for The Inspiral Carpets on a UK tour, with The Franks as the opening act.
Franks singer Paul Linehan has revealed how the Manchester legend also took up a role with the Irish rockers – leading to devastating consequences for Noel’s prize pet.
Paul told The Irish Sun: “Noel, having Irish parents, gravitated towards us and us to him. So when our guitar roadie had to leave the tour, Noel agreed to be The Franks and Walters roadie.
“Noel was the most unlikely roadie you could imagine. Very laid back at the side of the stage in this cool leather jacket.”
After the final date on the tour, in Manchester, Noel invited the Franks and their pals around to his flat.
Paul said: “Noel had this aquarium with two goldfish in it. Not one of our band, but someone in our entourage, poured vodka into the fish tank. You see, we had this lively entourage at the time, who would do anything.
“We were told a few weeks later, that Noel wasn’t happy with us because his two goldfish died.”
The Franks were stunned when their former roadie became a superstar, topping the charts around the world.
Paul said: “The gas thing is that on that tour, Noel gave me a tape of his songs. That could have been the first Oasis demo.
“But I often re-used cassettes back then to record my own songs and I taped over Noel’s cassette.”
The Franks’ lost touch with Noel and were shocked when he namechecked them in an interview, saying “if it wasn’t for the Frank and Walters, I’d still be working on a building site”.
Paul told The Irish Sun: “We had no idea that Noel was so talented because he was such a lovely unassuming guy. We were delighted that Oasis became so big.”
Paul added that watching The Franks playing live had inspired him to really go for it with Oasis.
Paul said: “We had this song called Walter’s Trip which Noel absolutely loved. I’d be honest to say we had no idea that Noel was so talented because he was such a lovely unassuming guy, ‘Gentlemanly’. We were delighted that Oasis became so big”.
