Kochi: More pet parents have been walking into veterinary hospitals with their four-legged friends as the hot summer is conducive to the multiplication of parasites in dogs and cats, leading to an increase in the number of infection cases. With the pets catching diseases from parasites, the district veterinary hospital near DH Ground is seeing at least three such cases per day.“There has been a rise in parasite infections among pets. We are witnessing cases of canine babesiosis (a tick-borne disease that can lead to kidney failure) and mycoplasma infection (caused by a bacterial parasite that attaches itself to the surface of the red blood cells of cats) every day. Both are life-threatening diseases. As the temperature rises, the animals experience stress, and the diseases will have the upper hand on them. We also get cases related to parvovirus in dogs,” said a veterinary doctor at the govt hospital. Vets have warned pet parents to take precautions against the parasitic infections. “Pet parents must closely look for ticks and take suitable measures to protect their pets from them. They can apply tick-prevention medicines. It will be difficult to remove the ticks once they infect the pets,” he said. Private vet hospitals are also getting parasite infection cases. “We get six to eight cases per day. The symptom of a parasitic infection is itching. If the pet parents notice it, they should immediately bring the animal to the hospital. We also see other high temperature-related issues, including dehydration. Panting, loss of appetite, and tiredness are signs of dehydration. The pet parents should ensure that the animal remains always hydrated,” said Dr Kishorekumar K J of a private hospital in the city. Parasite infections are mostly seen in obese and furry dogs.
