Pets at Home has banned the sales of rabbits over the Easter weekend to stop ‘impulse’ purchases.
From the Mad March Hare to the Easter Bunny, rabbits have been synonymous with springtime since ancient times. However, the popular pet retailer warned that the animals have ‘complex needs’ and ‘careful reflection’ is needed before customers jump into making a purchase.
Any sale and adoption of bunnies will be paused across its 457 stores nationwide from 29th March to 1st April.
“For several years now, we’ve made the decision to temporarily halt rabbit sales over the Easter weekend,” says Kathryn Patel, Head of Pets at Home. “This is a deliberate decision to discourage people from making impulsive choices during this celebratory time and to help people be responsible pet owners.
“Rabbits have complex needs, including specialised dietary requirements and environments, and we always want to educate and encourage careful reflection on how those needs will be met before homing.
“We want all pets to be placed into loving homes – the last thing we want is for a customer to rush into owning rabbits.”
According to the RSPCA, irresponsible breeders contribute to a surge in unwanted rabbits that have swamped animal centers over recent years. In 2022, a whopping 48% of rabbits were abandoned, with 1,090 bunnies arriving at animal centres and 1,942 rescued by RSPCA branches.
This Pets at Home initiative hopes to encourage healthy pet ownership and ensure people buy animals for the right reasons.
It follows in the footsteps of the famous Dog’s Trust campaign ‘a dog is for life, not just for Christmas’, which stresses that canine ownership is a long-term commitment – and shouldn’t be viewed as a seasonal gift.
