GENESEE COUNTY, Mich.—As temperatures rise, it’s essential for pet owners to take precautions to protect their furry friends from the dangerous effects of heat.
Hannah Peterson, a social media specialist, emphasizes the importance of being aware of how hot the ground can get, even if the air feels only mildly warm.
“One of the biggest things people don’t realize is how hot the pavement or concrete gets. It can be dangerously hot, sometimes twice as hot as the air temperature,” Peterson explained. “Dogs and cats can get blisters and burns on their paws very quickly. It’s super painful for them.”
Peterson advises a simple test to check if the ground is safe: “Feel the ground with the back of your hand. If you can comfortably hold it there for five or six seconds, your pet will likely be comfortable too. If not, stick to grassy areas.”
Beyond protecting paws, Peterson stresses the importance of keeping pets inside during extreme heat.
“If you have air conditioning, bring them inside. And if your pet is outside, make sure they always have access to cold, clean water and shade,” she said. “Extreme heat can be deadly for animals.”
Leaving pets in cars is also a serious concern.
“There’s been a lot of attention brought to this in recent years. Do not leave your pet unattended in a car, especially without the AC on. Sadly, many animals have died due to heat, and it’s entirely preventable.”
By taking these precautions, Peterson believes pet owners can avoid unnecessary pain and costly vet bills.
“It’s all about keeping them safe and comfortable in the heat,” she concluded.
