While many of us will be occupied with the excitement surrounding Monday’s total solar eclipse, some of our animals friends may not be as interested in the event. Although experts say most domesticated animals should be fine during the eclipse, it’s worth noting that some may not respond as well to the celestial event.
According to CBS News, Dr. Katie Krebs, a veterinarian and professor at University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, says that while most pets won’t be bothered, some may show signs of confusion or other odd behavior. If your pet starts showing some odd behaviors, that likely won’t last long and should pass as the eclipse moves by.

However, Krebs and other experts say there are some things to take into consideration if you’re planning on watching the eclipse from your home with your pet or if you plan on hitting the road with your furry friends.
- Pets take their cues from their humans, so as long as you’re not forcing them into an uncomfortable situation, they may not even notice the eclipse.
- Animals who are upset by thunderstorms or fireworks may not do well at eclipse-themed gatherings as the extra noise and excitement may cause them to be uncomfortable.
- Most pets instinctively know not to look into the sun. If your furry friend isn’t spooked by the event, you shouldn’t have to worry about them looking at the sun as they’ve typically already learned not to do that.
- If you do take your pet to an eclipse event away from home, make sure they are on a leash and are microchipped so they can be located if they do run away from you.
