STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Have you ever wondered if your dog or cat enjoys music? It turns out they do.
One study shows that listening to certain music genres lowers the stress levels of kenneled dogs. Dogs had the most positive responses to soft rock and reggae.
The volume can also affect your pet. The lower the volume and the slower the tempo, the better. If it’s time for bed, try playing classical music to help your pet fall asleep and ease anxiety.
There are even websites like musicforpets.co geared specifically toward helping your pet with music or TV shows. A calmer and happier pet means a happier you.
ADOPTING A PET
Thanks to the volunteers devoted to helping these animals get adopted by loving families like yours. Volunteering at the animal rescues listed below takes significant time and dedication.
Volunteers organize pet events every week in and around the borough, send out announcements, hold fundraisers, help with supplies, clean cages, feed animals, ensure a pet’s medical needs are met, and so much more. All of this is done without pay, all for love and behind the scenes.
If you want to adopt, please remember that there are loving senior and disabled pets who need your care and attention, too. If you can’t adopt, please consider volunteering, donating, or fostering, or sharing this page with someone who can.
Meet Irving…
Irving is a very happy, social boy who loves making new friends. His idea of paradise is a park with lots of other dogs to play with and places to sniff. Irving loves meeting new people and does great with men and kids. He’s never met a person he doesn’t like! While not laying in the sun, Irving is working on becoming a gold medalist in the game of fetch.
Irving is very food-motivated, eager to learn, and is building new skills via his training every day. Irving is fully housebroken and crate trained, and is perfectly content spending a few hours at a time alone in his crate in case you need to step away from home. He always sleeps soundly through the night in his crate, although he’d love to sleep in the bed with you if given the chance. Warning: Irving is a snuggle monster!
Irving is super easy going, and he loves trips to the spa (a.k.a. bath time, getting his nails clipped, and staying tidy) and can be convinced to do just about anything, including taking medicine, with the help of peanut butter.
Irving takes the cake for being a sweetheart. Irving’s happy attitude and loving personality make him a 5-star doggo. This boy is a winner, folks!
Irving is being fostered in Washington Heights, Manhattan. His adoption fee is $500.

Meet Splish…
He is cat-friendly, dog-friendly, and terrific with adults and kids. He is frisky and fun, but also knows how to chill out. He will swat feathers, chase plastic balls, and play with string toys…and then go down for a much-needed cat nap!
He is cuddly, cute, and very entertaining to have around. He has a soothing purr and a gentle meow that will melt your heart. This deserving fluff-ball is a gem and will make someone very happy.

1. Low-cost or free spay and neuter: The ASPCA’s free and low-cost mobile spay and neuter van travels throughout the five boroughs in every neighborhood.
Low-income pet owners in the five boroughs with proof of public assistance, such as welfare, Medicaid, Medicare, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), disability, food stamps, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), or public housing qualify for free spay/neuter services for their cat or dog. If you have a pit bull, pit-bull mix, or certain large breed dogs, it’s also free.
