A private civilian aircraft was intercepted by fighter jets Sunday morning after violating restricted airspace above Kananaskis during the G7 Summit.
North American Aerospace Defense Command [NORAD], supporting the RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group, deployed CF-18 Hornet jets from the Canadian region after the fixed-wing plane entered CYR 292 at about 11:05 a.m.
The restricted zone, centred over Kananaskis Village, was established as part of security protocols for the G7.

NORAD says the aircraft was unresponsive and triggered a tactical response.
After several attempts to make contact, NORAD employed final warning measures to gain the pilot’s attention and directed the plane to land safely under its own power.
The RCMP and its security partners say the breach is being taken seriously, and stressed the responsibility of pilots to check for active air restrictions before flying.
“These incidents pull critical resources away from police work and securing the summit site,” said RCMP through a release.
