How the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System works on small planes such as the G3 Vision Jet

There are times in the life of a high-flyer when you’ll need to get on a light aircraft. It’s about getting where you need to go – a far-flung lodge, a remote site visit – as swiftly as possibly. One engine. One pilot. Hopefully, enough parachutes to go around?

But perhaps the better question is, why don’t small planes have parachutes of their own? In the event of engine failure, why can’t pilots just pull a lever, eject a big pillowy chute and let the aircraft and its passengers float down to safety – a bit like how space capsules used to splash down.
