Factors influencing salary

There are three main factors that would influence the salary for a private pilot. They are:

  • Experience and flight hours: There are three experience levels for pilots; entry-level, mid-level and senior level. According to Aviation Career Hub, the salaries are:

    Entry-Level

    $50,000 – $85,000

These are pilots who have just started their careers and do not have less than 250 flying hours. They tend to work for smaller private jet companies or charters.

    Mid-Level

    $85,000 – $150,000

Pilots in this category have logged over 2000 hours of flight hours. They may fly for more sophisticated jets, larger private jet services or maybe be second in command on larger private jets.

    Senior Level

    $150,000 – $250,000

These pilots have over 5000 hours of flight time logged in. They would frequently work with high-net-worth individuals and corporations or be first in command in charter companies.

  • Geographical location: The type of employer can also impact the salary. Private pilots can work for large charter companies, smaller companies or privately owned jets. Working for large charter companies or on privately owned jets usually comes with a generous salary and other employment perks. Some examples of the additional benefits include:

    Bonuses

While flying for corporate clients or high-net-worth individuals, pilots may receive annual bonuses depending on their performance or if they hit a milestone in the number of flight hours they completed.

    Health and Retirement benefits

They may receive packages that include health insurance, retirement plans and paid time-off.

    Travel allowances

Pilots may receive an allowance for food and stay if they are traveling for work. Some companies will also cover the cost of transportation and accommodation for longer trips.

    Paid training and certification

Employers will pay for certification, and for additional training required for specific aircraft or to meet new regulations.

Do Private Jet Pilots Make More Than Commercial Pilots?

The answer is more complicated than you might expect.

The factors influencing private jet traffic.

There are many reasons why people decide to fly privately. Here is a breakdown of a few:

  1. Economic factors such as wealth and spending power can result in higher amounts of private jets needed in operation, resulting in a demand for more pilots with a type rating for a private jet. According to Fortune, between 2012 and 2022, West Palm Beach, Florida and Miami, Florida experienced the most millionaire growth by 90% and 75% respectively. The other cities that made it to the top 5 in terms of millionaire growth were: Austin, Texas (102%); Scottsdale, Arizona (88%); and Greenwich and Darien, Connecticut (72%). Out of the 5 cities, Miami has the most billionaires, 12, and the highest number of residents, with a net worth of over $100 million.
  2. Flying private allows individuals to optimise their air travel experience to their needs and preferences. Flying private allows individuals to save a significant amount of time compared to flying commercial. Additionally, there is more flexibility in terms of scheduling and the route of the flight. Owning or chartering a private jet allows for customization with regard to the interior of the jet so it can meet the needs and preferences of everyone’s needs.
  3. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the desire to fly privately increased due to the travel restrictions as travelling privately allowed for more control over travel plans. This led to highlighting the flexibility and convenience of private jet travel, which in turn influenced more people to travel privately who before the pandemic, would most likely travel in a first-class cabin on a commercial flight.

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport

Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport is a great option for people who want to avoid the high-speed atmosphere of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. With two runways, it is one of the busiest private airports in Florida. However, it never feels that way due to its 5 fixed based operators.

Palm Beach International Airport

Palm Beach International Airport is located 3 miles south-east of Palm Beach. The three FBOs are located on the south end of the airport, allowing its private jet customers that executive feel.

Boca Raton Airport

Boca Raton Airport is in between Palm Beach Airport and Fort Lauderdale. In 2018, it started to allow international flights to land directly at the airport instead of making a stop beforehand as it added an onsite Customs and Border Protection facility.
