A CBS News reporter called out Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez‘s star-studded $50 million Italian wedding as ‘performative’ after the correspondent’s colleague Gayle King was seen hamming it up at flashy the three-day affair.  

While reporting live from Italy for CBS Mornings on Monday, correspondent Seth Doane gave a lengthy appraisal of the extravagant nuptials and its A-list attendees – including King, the morning show’s co-host.

‘Guests, many bold-faced names, shuttled around in boats. Lots and lots of boats,’ Doane offered of the Venice setting.

‘Representing media, Oprah, and yes, our own Gayle King; tech, Bill Gates; sports, Tom Brady; fashion – that’s Tommy Hilfiger – and film.’

Footage of King climbing aboard a chauffeured boat with close pal Oprah Winfrey flashed on screen as Doane name-checked them during the segment.  

‘Some of the 200 invited were in a category all their own. There was a performative aspect to some of this. Even if not everyone got their shot,’ he continued, as images of other stars like Kim Kardashian accompanied the report.

‘Not much came from the ceremony itself,’ Doane added, saying the event left ‘some questioning whether we were seeing another gilded age on gaudy display.’  

‘Protesters were decrying Amazon’s impact on jobs and small business here in Italy and calling out inequality and elitism. Some used the attention to lament high housing costs, damage from over-tourism, and just the excess of it all.

‘For centuries, Venice has been a stage for opulence, parties that can enchant, excite, and or disgust,’ he concluded.

‘This past weekend was just the latest show.’

The Daily Mail contacted CBS News for comment. 

King was spotted with her pal Oprah waving at the crowd as they boarded a boat that brought them to the behind-the-scenes bash from the Venice Marco Polo Airport Thursday.

The two were seen again leaving the Gritti Palace Hotel together on Friday, before being whisked away again.

The celebrations kicked off Thursday and lasted until Saturday, with Bezos and Sanchez renting out a number of locales to ring the occasion.

Some had to be moved due to safety concerns brought by protesters

A party planned at the Scuola Grande della Misericordia for Saturday night had to be moved to another venue in the Arsenale area of the city.

The party comes months after King and Sanchez cemented their friendship with a costly trip into space aboard a Bezos aircraft that’s raised questions about her employer CBS’ rules about accepting gifts for good coverage.

The rest of report revolved largely around pushback from locals due to Amazon’s impact on jobs and small business in the area, and the shindig’s sheer scale

Katy Perry was also along for the Blue Origin ride as well, but was missing from the wedding.

Her longtime beau, Orlando Bloom, was in attendance amid reports that the have split.

He was spotted chatting with Winfrey and King in Venice on Friday.
