When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry in May 2018, she wore a stunning gown designed by Clare Waight Keller under the Givenchy label.

The dress differed from those previously worn by other royal brides as it did not include lace, embellishments, or embroidered details. But according to reports, American Vogue editor Anna Wintour said Meghan looked “fantastic” in the “sophisticated” dress she opted for.

Talking about the Duchess of Sussex’s wedding gown, the Vogue editor said: “It was sophisticated, it was chic, it was grown-up. It was an English designer, albeit one who worked for a French house, which in a way was a message to the world: ‘Yes, I’m from somewhere else, but I belong’. I thought she looked fantastic.”

Designer Clare said creating the dress was “just a pleasure” and during the process, she became friends with Meghan. She made the comments while attending the 2023 Bazaar At Work Summit in London and said: “It was just a pleasure to create in this very, very private way.

“It was just the two of us for so long and it became this very personal girlfriend relationship.” At the time of Meghan and Harry’s nuptials, Clare spoke to reporters at Kensington Palace saying: “It was an extraordinary moment. It was an incredible thing to be part of, such an historic moment and, in fact, to have the opportunity to work with her.”

She then said that working with Meghan and creating the sleek gown was a “very collaborative” effort. Speaking about Meghan’s “something blue”, Waight Keller previously: “We basically sewed it into the hem of the wedding dress, so she was the only one that knew that it was there. It was a little blue gingham check.”

Elaborating further, the designer added: “It was the perfect personal memento that was secretly hidden inside the dress.” Meghan had previously touched on the secret bit of blue fabric that was sewn into her wedding dress, but had only alluded to where it was stitched.
