A woman has sparked a fierce etiquette debate over how dressed up one can be at a wedding before you’re stealing the show.
TikTok user Kelly posted a video showing off a potential maid-of-honor dress for her best friend’s upcoming wedding.
The dress was an ankle length butter yellow dress, which was covered in different sized sequins, and featured a full skirt and square neckline.
‘My current dilemma is that I bought this dress from the ASOS Arrange shop,’ the content creator explained in the clip.
She explained she had purchased it for her best friend’s wedding in May, which she is a maid of honor in.
‘The theme for the bridesmaids is fun, colorful, unique dresses,’ she explained. ‘But I still think it is too much.’
‘If it is too much should I keep the dress and hope I can wear it in the future, or just return it?’ Kelly asked followers.
She added the sequins made a noticeable sound when she walked, admitting the dress is ‘gorgeous though.’
‘Is this too much for anything? How could I ever wear this?’ she asked, captioning the post. ‘Help girls! What can I wear this to as an already married gal? Or do I return?’

The dress, which is currently out of stock, retails for $299 on the ASOS website.
Over 4,000 comments were left on the video with a resounding plea for the woman not to wear the dress to a wedding – unless she planned to steal the show.
‘Do not wear that to someone else’s wedding unless they are an enemy,’ declared one user.
Another agreed, writing: ‘No, that’s not appropriate a wedding. I mean unless you hate your best friend.’
Someone else told Kelly to ask the bride. ‘She wanted you all to wear something fun,’ they pointed out.
Another told Kelly to not wear the dress to a wedding – but save it for another occasion.
‘I feel like it would be too attention grabbing standing next to a bride at a wedding. But definitely keep it! Could be fun for NYE or another fancy event,’ suggested another.
Nick Leighton, an etiquette expert on the Were You Raised By Wolves podcast, told the DailyMail.com it’s important to remember that as a maid of honor, the overall goal should be to celebrate the bride.

‘We don’t want to upstage or steal the spotlight,’ he warned.
The expert added that when in doubt, it’s best to always ‘err on the side of caution.’
‘If you have to ask “is this dress ok?” that can sometimes be your clue that it might not be,’ he added.
Nick pointed out the video says the theme for the bridesmaids was ‘colorful’ – admitting he’s not sure if this particular dress meets the brief.
‘The best way to know for sure is to just ask the bride,’ he advised. ‘No need to make the dress a wedding day surprise.’
