Chandigarh: Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested two men who would pose as wedding planners offering a package between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.5 lakh for the “kanyadan” ritual, but would simply collect the money and never return.Maulana Arshad of Mewat and Rashid of Palwal are accused of having duped 1,400 people of Rs 14 crore by following the same modus operandi.Initial probe revealed the accused would entice their targets by giving them kanyadan packages ranging from Rs 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh, and offering a motorcycle, complete wedding paraphernalia, and Rs 21,000 in the package. Zubeida, a resident of Nangal Shahpur in Nagina, lodged a complaint on April 1, 2024, detailing how Arshad, Rashid, and their associated had defrauded her. TNN
