Riedel Communications implemented a fully IP-based communications set-up for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Barcelona.
In a first for the sailing competition, Riedel enabled the camera chase boats to listen directly to the real-time internal communications from all of the race yachts.
Using a custom tablet-based interface provided by Riedel, the chase boat drivers and spotters were able to select and monitor specific race yachts and to listen to onboard conversations, despite challenging conditions and noise levels.
As a result, the chase boats could position themselves closer to the action and adjust their movements based on the anticipated actions of the yachts, thereby improving safety and shot composition for camera operators, as well as the overall viewer experience.
The system included 24 rugged, saltwater-proof comms cases, accessible via 5G/LTE to support any situation remotely, even when the yachts were on the water.
While bringing the benefits of the Bolero wireless intercom to the crew, the kits also connected to the shore and the chase boats, creating a seamless intercom solution on and off shore.
The crew also used 72 waterproof Riedel Bolero beltpacks with custom headsets adapted to their sailing helmets, allowing for hands-free operation. On the shore, 70 Riedel SmartPanels and one Riedel Artist-1024 matrix ensured seamless communication for all vessels, complemented by more than 280 TETRA radios and a VHF commentary installation.
As well as offering a fully integrated set-up for the broadcast intercom, Riedel provided the event radios and Riedel SmartPanels – all interfaced via Riedel’s Juggler software – for the main operations control at America’s Cup Events.
These components ensured reliable and clear audio transmission in challenging marine environments, facilitating instant communication between teams, support staff, course marshals and safety boats.
Riedel also provided custom communications systems for all of the competing teams, with more than 220 Bolero wireless beltpacks being used live on the water during peak days .
“Riedel’s innovative IP-based communication system represents a significant leap forward in how we manage and produce this iconic event,” said Stephen Nuttall, head of television for the 37th America’s Cup Barcelona.
“The company’s innovative technology not only enables us to enhance the viewer experience – bringing fans closer to the action than ever by allowing every sailor’s voice to be heard on the broadcast – but also significantly improves operational efficiency and safety on the water.
“This comprehensive solution helped us achieve our goal of making the America’s Cup the most technologically advanced sailing competition in the world.”
Jeff Strössner, director of business development managed technology at Riedel Communications, says: “The introduction of direct, real-time, high-quality audio communications between chase boats and race yachts represented a significant advancement in how production teams capture the intensity and strategy of America’s Cup racing.”
