A historic Northumberland pub is hosting an Easter charity fundraiser to help support a solo global yachtsman whilst he travels across the world in a handmade boat.

The Ox Inn in Morpeth, Northumberland, has teamed up with Adam Waugh, from Bolam – who is currently sailing and competing in a Mini Globe Race covering 28,000 nautical miles in a 5.8-metre yacht.

He is doing so to raise money for the Ella Dawson Foundation, which supports young people with cancer across the UK to live well and feel empowered.

Any funding Adam secures during his adventures on his round the world trip – that saw him set off from Antigua in February and is expected to last 14 months – will be donated to the charity.

Adam is currently competing alongside 15 other yachts in the McIntyre Global 5.8 Mini-Series in a boat “Little Wren” he built himself in two years in his garden shed in Northumberland. On April 8, he began Leg Two, setting off from Panama to Fiji.

Adam met Ella Dawson’s mum, Jane Dawson, together with several young people being helped by the charity while skippering a yacht on a round-Britain voyage. He was so impressed by the foundation and its work that he is donating whatever funding he raises from his round-the-world adventures to the charity.

To support Adam’s fundraising efforts and in homage to his love of his local pub and his favourite pint of ‘Mad Jack’ ale, the Ox Inn is donating 100% of all takings on Mad Jack over the whole Easter weekend.

The Inn is being supported by Mad Jack’s brewers, the First & Last Brewery in Bellingham, Northumberland, that are providing a keg of ale as part of the charity fundraiser.

Adrian Waddell, Owner and landlord of the Ox Inn Pub, said: “We received a video note from Adam, filmed in the cockpit of his Little Wren boat, giving a shout-out to our pub, and saying how much he was looking forward to a pint of Mad Jack, his favourite beer in his favourite pub, on his return.

“Hats off to Adam on his mad-cap adventures. We certainly couldn’t go to the lengths he has to raise money for the Ella Dawson Foundation, but we are keen to do our bit. To tap into Adam’s love of a pint we will donate 100% of the proceeds from Mad Jack’s sales this weekend to the charity.

“We invite everyone to come down and drink Mad Jack all weekend, knowing that they’ll be helping young people battling with cancer across the UK, And, we will certainly have a pint at the ready for Adam’s return sometime next year.”
