Peugeot and Jeep are making a renewed push to recover market share in mainland China, according to a statement from the French-Italian automotive group Stellantis. The two brands, owned by Stellantis, have committed to fresh investments to build electric cars with partner Dongfeng Motor, joining other international marques in intensifying competition against Chinese rivals in the world’s largest car market.
Stellantis announced on Friday that four electric vehicles under the two storied auto brands would roll off production lines in 2027. The European carmaker is leveraging Chinese technologies to assemble what it described as best-class cars for the future of mobility.
Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa stated that the companies are ready to further leverage their strengths and introduce all-new vehicles with cutting-edge EV technologies from brands trusted globally. He expressed anticipation for the project and for deeper future collaboration.
According to the statement, the two companies would budget a combined 8 billion yuan (US$1.18 billion) for mass producing the new models, with Stellantis contributing about US$130 million. Some vehicles assembled at the Stellantis-Dongfeng ventures would also be exported to overseas markets.
Peugeot and Jeep have long been eclipsed by local rivals in a market where the EV adoption rate has exceeded 60 percent. They are following in the footsteps of Hyundai Motor’s Ioniq in attempting to regain lost ground in mainland China.
