The past week has been a huge one for Grand Theft Auto 6 fans, with a Best Buy email seemingly confirming that pre-orders for the game will open on May 18. After months of waiting for the elusive third trailer and an official reveal of the game’s much-debated price, fans have been readily gearing up for the big day.
The latest update, however, suggests that things might not be quite as they appear. While plenty of fans are still clinging to their optimism, the GTA 6 community has once more been split over whether anything is actually happening next week.
In the latest episode of the Insider Gaming podcast on YouTube, insider Tom Henderson suggests that expectations for a GTA 6 trailer and pre-orders on Monday might be mistaken. Instead, Henderson suggests that GTA 6 marketing material likely won’t gear up until July or August, an argument that has quickly sent fans into a frenzy.
Opinions on the GTA 6 subreddit are varied, with users like JiN8888V backtracking from the recent “HOPIUM” about the game’s pre-orders. Others, however, are a lot more skeptical of Henderson’s position. CristianPerlado breaks down a record of Tom Henderson’s previous inaccuracies regarding GTA and other Rockstar games, suggesting that he’s not an authority on this particular subject. Tank-ToP_Master argues that waiting until August to kick off the main marketing cycle would be too late, leaving Rockstar with only a few months to actively build hype for a massive release.
It’s worth noting that Insider Gaming also confirms the legitimacy of the Best Buy email revealing the May 18 date, so the argument hinges on the idea that the email was incorrect rather than illegitimate. Right now, there’s little else to go on. Jason Schreier, perhaps the most consistent voice in the field, hasn’t reported on the leak, despite debunking other recent gaming rumors like a Rocksteady Batman Beyond game.
Either way, we won’t have to wait long to find out whether pre-orders open on May 18. If the day comes and goes without incident, Henderson may be right in expecting a wait until July or August for the third trailer. If, on the other hand, something does drop, the results will speak for themselves.
In the meantime, Henderson’s skepticism can’t stop the hype train in its tracks. Take-Two stock has surged since the Best Buy email, and the community is on the edge of its seat. Whether big news comes Monday or not, Grand Theft Auto 6 feels closer than ever.
