Classic Cold War cars roll into Yorkshire Air Museum for Father’s Day

by R.Donald

Families are being invited to step back in time this Father’s Day as classic cars and motorbikes from the Cold War era roll into the Yorkshire Air Museum.

Yorkshire Air Museum will host the Cold War Wheels event on June 21, offering a nostalgic journey through the cars and bikes of the 1960s to 1980s.

Jerry Ibbotson, marketing manager at the museum, said: “Cold War Wheels is now in its fourth year and is a really popular event.

“We hold a 1940s weekend in May of each year, when we take people back to that period of history.

“This is like that – but with the nineteen sixties to eighties.

“People can reminisce about the cars and bikes they remember seeing when they were younger.”

Visitors can expect to see period favourites such as the Ford Capri, Triumph Stag, and even a vintage double-decker bus.

The vehicles will be displayed alongside the museum’s collection of Cold War-era jets.

In addition to the automotive displays, Mr Ibbotson said guests can enjoy a throwback soundtrack.

He said: “We even throw in some period music, instead of the wartime songs we normally play here at the Museum.”

There is also something new on the lineup for this year.

Mr Ibbotson said: “We’ve got a display of a classic 1960s toy – the Triang Minic Motorway.

“It’s like a cross between a slot-car track and model trainset.”

The museum will also screen its Cold War Stories video series throughout the day.

Produced in 2023 for its Cold War exhibition, the films feature personal accounts from the era, including stories from a nuclear bomber pilot and someone who grew up in the Soviet Union.

Cold War Wheels is included with standard museum admission.
