The USDA is once again allowing dog owners to bring their pets across the southern border into Mexico, but only if they meet certain health requirements.
Given the ongoing New World Screwworm outbreaks, pet owners may want to think twice about bringing their dogs to Mexico, according to experts.

Last week, dogs were briefly added to the list of animals prohibited from crossing the border. The USDA has since reversed that rule, allowing dogs to travel to Mexico as long as they have been examined by a vet and certified as healthy. Similar requirements have been in place since 2024.
Animal shelter workers say they take dogs across the border because of the cheaper veterinary care in Mexico.
Veterinarians are advising all pet owners to scan their furry friends for any exposed wounds and treat them as soon as possible.
