July 15th is National Pet Fire Safety Day and a good reminder make sure we’re prepared during fire season.
Pack a Pet Emergency “Go-Bag”
What to include:
- Several days’ supply of food and water
- Several days of medications and prescription information
- Leash, harness, or carrier
- Copies of vaccination records and medical history – your veterinarian can send these electronically
- Current microchip information – be sure to update microchip records with change of address, phone number, etc. so firefighters can quickly reunite you and your pet
- Familiar items such as a favorite toy or blanket for stress reduction

If Your Pet Has Been Exposed to Smoke or Fire
Even if your pet seems normal after escaping a fire, they should be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Smoke inhalation and heat exposure can cause injuries that are not immediately visible. Pets may develop delayed respiratory distress, airway inflammation, burns, or other internal injuries hours after exposure. Early veterinary evaluation allows these problems to be identified and treated before they become life-threatening.
